WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Given my error the other night

in posting the same Cesaria Evora track for the second time, tonight I shall redress the balance by posting tunes of hers not previously posted on MOG. First up comes from her 1996 Paris recorded "Live A L'Olympia" album - Cesaria was in her mid-forties before she and another Cape Verdean singer named Bana came to Europe for the first time. Both are from Mindelo, where they learned the morna and the coladheira styles from, amongst others, the great Cape Verdean composer and singer B. Leza (a pun on the Portuguese beleza, meaning beautiful), who is reported to have been her uncle. This is another morna tune

This tune is in the coladheira  dance style, and is a put-down to a former lover. The title "Quem Bo E?"means "Who are you?", and the lyrics tell the subject of the song that he is nothing more to the singer, and can make his own life for himself, as she is no longer interested. This, for those who want to track it down, is on a CD called "Cabo Verde"

I am always impressed by her voice and smile. She should duet with Jimmy Scott.

I love the first track, the beautifully complex yet subdued arrangement couches her voice so well.

The second track is nice too,  but I'm goin' back to the first.

The live song is really sweet.  I really love the combo, very tasty piano and just the right touch of guitar.

lovely additions to the MOG inventory. i near-raised an eyebrow after reading that there was not a single entry on Cesaria Evora, it's good to know there are at least a few.
