This is a hymn, rather than a pop song, but it was already well known and oft sung before Sister Rosetta Tharpe applied her larynx to it. No date for this, but I suspect it must have been cut in the early Sixties.

Yes Baudolino, I believe you're correct as to the recording date, it sounds about right.
This is one of those covers that, in a way, is not a cover. It throws out the melody and chord changes, keeps the lyrics but creates something totally different. Of course, if it WAS just a recitation of the Christmas hymn, I wouldn't have enjoyed it.
