A Jamaican classic now

Posted over 3 years ago

Pat Kelly was born in 1949, and replaced the wonderful Keith "Slim" Smith as lead singer in the Techniques, during the rocksteady era. When the group finally went their separate ways, Pat began a long solo career, recording initially for Bunny Lee, where his name was made for all time by his ripped from the heart performance on this tune. It was helped somewhat by the superb backing band Gladdy's All Stars, who backed most top JA acts of the time - you can clearly hear Gladstone Anderson's piano and Hux Brown's rhythm guitar driving this formidable beat.

The melody owes something to "(At the) Dark End of the Street" - this was recognised when the next cut was a cover of "(AT)DEOTS" by Pat himself, folllowed by Rolando Al's sax instrumental "Peyton Place", although I'm sure you don't want me to post them

Guy reminds me of Sam Cooke. Good track.

The Techniques were very much in the Sam Cooke/Curtis Mayfield mould
