Chariot Style (1977)

Posted over 3 years ago

In 1977, veteran Jamaican producer Derrick "Chariot" Harriott pitched up at Channel One with a bunch of rhythms, and invited Sly Dunbar and the crew to do some overdubbing. The resulting LP "Go Deh Wid Riddim" saw release only in Jamaica on the Crystal label, and vanished for many years, although it can now be found on a few download sites, mostly based in Brazil.

This cut involves some fairly extensive overdubbing and a new organ solo by Ansel Collins on Derrick's own 1968 hit "Do I Worry?"

And here is Derrick Harriott's own vocal cut, released on UK Island as a single in 1968

The song itself, however, is much older. Here are the Ink Spots with Hoppy Jones speaking the bass part, performing it in the film "Pardon My Sarong" in 1942. It was also used in the soundtrack of the recent Leonardo di Cappuccino Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator"

Excellent trilogy of music. I thought the first dubtrack was blinding! The fact that you can find the original way back from 1942 is awesome.
