Cocoa Tea on Motown

Posted over 3 years ago

Calvin "Cocoa Tea" Scott was born in 1959 (as was I) and made his first record as a teenager, with no success. After a number of years working as a jockey (horse not disc) he returned to recording in the 1980s, and cut some of the finest dancehall music of all, often utilising the Premier production skills of King Jammy, Bobby "Digital B" Dixon, and Philip "Fatis" Burrell. his high melodic tenor was more suited to "conscious" lyrics and love songs than the more sexist and violent dancehall tunes, and he was in the forefront of the movement to divert the dancehall scene from gun lyrics and slackness to more socially aware themes.

In 1997, for reasons that are far from obvious, he signed briefly to Motown - a deal unlikely to benefit either party. His core reggae audience weren't going to repurchase tunes they already owned, while a self-effacing Rastafarian recording tunes called "Riker's island" and "Israel's King" was always going to be a hard sell to the pop/soul market.

Unsurprisingly, within a year they'd parted company, and Cocoa went on to set up his own Roaring Lion imprint, but more of that another day....

This tune was originally released on Fatis Burrell's Xterminator label, before reappearing on Motown

And for those of you scratching your heads and saying "I know that tune from somewhere, but I can't quite place it", here is the answer - it versions Bob Marley and the Wailers "One Drop" from "Survival", released in 1979
