Way Back Wednesday: The Stereophonics
-
Artist:
Both critical acclaim and commercial success were unknown to the Stereophonics; in fact, it appears that they only cut one single, back in 1958, on the Apt Records label, a 45 rpm only label distributed by ABC-Paramount, that featured such household names as the Terracetones, The Click-Clacks, Choker Campbell and Vinnie Rome and the Rainbeaus. They did have some success with Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' "Shakin' All Over", and Lonnie Donegan's "Pick a Bale of Cotton". Apt also released 25080 "Treat Him Tender Maureen (Now That Ringo Belongs To You)" by Angie and the Chicklettes (!), a cheapo cash-in well worthy of posting one Toxic Tuesday. Biographical information on the Stereophonics is virtually imnpossible to obtain, although I have been able to ascertain that they werre a four-piece, all African-American, with a female lead singer. This is the A-side of APT 25003 "Love is So Wonderful" -
A number of CDs of ABC-Paramount and Apt doo-wop have been issued, and the two sides of this 45 can be fouind on different CDs. The B-side was written by one Thomas Martin, of whom I know nothing at all. This is "No More Heartaches", and is not the same as the early reggae track of the same name by the Belltones.
What was that? There's a newer group called Stereophonics and you came here by mistake?

George Clinton has a 45 or two that were on APT..that first cut was pretty cool, the second has its charms too. Well dug, Mr.B
I did spot a couple of tunes by The Parliaments, aye...
The label's release policy was a bit "eclectic" - towards the end of their career Bill Haley & the Comets put out two singles on Apt. The fact that they were labelmates would be a good "What do these artists have in common?" quiz tie-breaker.
Just looked at that APt Records discog..very strange
nice, very nice
