SUTC: Winston Francis and Prince Buster

Posted almost 2 years ago

"A Quiet Place" (often known as "Johnny Dollar") was written by Samuel Bell and Norman Meade, and was a smallish hit for Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters in 1964, produced by Jerry Ragovoy.

Unsurprisinly, the song struck a chord in the overcrowded slums of Kingston, Jamaica, where it has become something of a standard, and inspired a more localised version called "Man Next Door" or "I've Got To Get Away". Amongst the artist to record the original tune are Dave Barker, Roland Burrell aka the Rolands and these two -

First up, from 1965 a ska version by Prince Buster, probably backed by Dwight Pinckney & the Sharks, and released on Blue Beat in Britain in 1967

Next from 1980 is a 10" 45 on the Music Lab label by Mr Fixit himself - Winston Francis. It was some years after his two famous Coxsone LPs, and dates from the same rough period as his marvellous "Going to Zion". This is a full length mix with dub.

Not more than 75% sure, but I suspect that it might be a very young David Madden, before his time with Cedric "Im" Brooks (as the imaginatively named "Im & David") at Studio One and then as one of Zap-Pow.

Incidentally, Cedric Brooks (now aged 67) was reported as being gravely ill at the end of February, although it seems that his health has improved a little recently.
