Some subtle product placement here by Ken Boothe

Posted about 2 years ago

Some time in 1968, a very large American corporation approached Clement "Coxsone" Dodd with the proposal that one of his top artists do some promotion for their product. Never one to turn down a quick buck, Coxsone merrily agreed, and so it came to pass that Ken Boothe found himself in the studio cutting this track for release as a single. Let's see if you can spot the clever way he works the name of the product into the lyric -

The record, amazingly, was not a hit. Listeners vastly preferred the B-side, which was a cover of a Northern Soul hit by Kenny Lynch, by this time a comedian and TV personality in Britain. This latter track has been remade over the years by numerous reggae stars, and is far better known as a reggae hit than as a soul track
