Portuguese instrumental Thursday

with Carlos Paredes, the late lamented master of the guitarra portugues. He hasn't featured on here for nearly a year, which is a shame as he was a truly great talent

Such a sterling post (and grief-stricken mickimicki's earlier post from last November) catalyzed me into rummaging through my trove off and occasionally on for eleven days to summon a proper response and think of a related post of my own.  Liner notes by Kip Hanrahan for Carlos Paredes' 1989 Nonesuch Explorer album Guitarra Portuguesa tell us:

"Carlos Paredes was born into a family of masters of the instrument.  His grandfather, Goncalo Paredes, was one of the most respected composers in the traditional style.  His father, Artur Paredes, was rebellious and developed a far more aggressive approach.  He wrote new pieces for the instrument with angular melodies and difficult resolves, challenging the dominant gentility of tone and composition.  Working with the Gràcio family of Coimbra (the Paredes' home city), Artur Paredes literally reinvented and rebuilt the instrument to open more options for sharper and softer attacks, longer decays and more complex and assertive sounds."

Here he is playing “Variaçóes em Ré Menor” from the CD Variaçóes Em Fado Lisboa & Coimbra 1926-1936 (Kardum KAR 986) (France 1996).
