The tune was originally written by Curtis Mayfield, and recorded by the Impressions and Major Lance as "You'll Want Me Back". in 1967, Arthur "Duke" Reid cut the Techniques, with Pat Kelly singing lead, on the rhythm at Treasure Isle. A couple of years later, having mashed up the dances with it and sold numerous singles, he gave the backing track to his engineer Byron Smith, who was setting up his own "BARON'S" label.
He released three cuts - Nora Dean's vocal, Winston Wright's instrumental "Mesh Wire" and Dennis Alcapone's promotion tune for the El Paso Sound System, "Mosquito One". Here are the latter two.

Baudolino, you're amazing! Who would have thought that "Barb Wire" would have so many links? Wright and Alcapone do wonders with the tune. I just listened to iTunes' sample of Major Lance's "You'll Want Me Back," and wondered what the Jamaicans didn't change. You don't happen to have Pat Kelly's version to play for us by any chance?
I wish I had responded to more of the commenters on my old post.
By 1988, there had been at least forty versions of the rhythm released in Jamaica - Coxsone Dodd recorded a lovely cover by Slim Smith and the Gaylads, at the end of which Slim whoops "So Lonely" in a manner blatantly nicked later on by String of the Police for one of their early hits.
U-Roy cut a nice version for Prince Tony with Skin Flesh & Bones, called "Natty Don't Fear".
This, however is Pat Kelly with the Techniques, as requested.
Lovely. The wide path from A to B is fascinating.
