SNL: "Champion" Jack Dupree

Posted about 2 years ago

This post features a track not commercially available - the route from my first hearing it to its appearance here must thus remain undisclosed.

Self-taught pianist William Thomas "Jack" Dupree was born sometime between 1908 and 1910, and was thus well over eighty when he departed this world in January 1992. as a boxer, he fought 107 bouts and won a Golden Gloves title, hence his nickname "Champion" Jack Dupree. His military service was as a coook in the Us Navy, and he spent time as a POW. Relocating to Europe in the 1960s, he spent his time variously in Denmark, Germany and the UK, spending more than a decade in the less than legendary blues town of Halifax, West Yorkshire. He died in Hanover, Germany, of cancer.

This recording was made during his time in Europe, and dates from 1964

Thank you for revealing to me how great his voice and piano sound.  Am adding him to my get list.  deadman, because he sounds so alive doing "Junco Partner" here, I choose to believe that in this case he fortunately wasn't singing from personal experience.
