WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

I hereby declare tonight "Special Request Thursday"

Posted 10 months ago
  • Artist:
    S E Rogie & the Morningstars
  • Album:
    Palm Wine Guitar Music
  • Track:
    Twist With the Morningstars

and shall kick the night off with some S.E. Rogie for MOGger Spike. He was born in Sierra Leone around 1940 (officially, although I suspect this date is a little generous). He made his first solo recordings in his rudimentary home studio back in 1960. "Please Go Easy With Me", "Do Me Justice" and "My Lovely Elizabeth" were all hits. By 1965 he was successful enough to form his own band the Morningstars.

In 1965 the twist craze reached Sierra Leone....

In 1967 he visited Monrovia, Liberia, where (at the request of President Tubman) he cut some tunes in the local Philips radio store. This is "I Wish I was a Cowboy"

I like the lo-fi sound here,  it so enhances this song.  It sounds "honest", you know?  Its all right there, no room for error or showboating. The ambient sound of the guitar in an "unsound-proofed" room and the resultant reverb give the track a "dancehall" feel.

    Very Nice

The second track could have come from Austin, Nashville, or even New York (by way of the caribbean).

    Cool post Buadolino
