Born in Rutherglen in 1948 and raised since infancy in Edinburgh's tough docklands of Leith (to this day, Leithers resent bitterly their enforced joining to the City of Edinburgh in 1920, opposed by 80% of Leith voters), Dick Gaughan has long been a feature on Scotland's folk scene, with stints in the Boys of the Lough and Five Hand Reel predating his solo success.
A radical socialist, in the 1970s he was a member of the 7:84 company (who take their name from the statistic that 7% of the population control 84% of the wealth), and he has recorded tributes to Woody Guthrie and Ewan MacColl. As well as his own songs, he performs the works of Robert Burns and Leon Rosselson amongst others. His best known albums are "Handful of Earth" (1981) and "A Different Kind Of Love Song" (1983) from the latter of which I have selected this cover of Joe South's best known song.
Incidentally, he is also reported to be a talented web designer (if Wikipedia is to be believed).
