SUNDAY NOT QUITE UNDER COVERS WITH EARL SIXTEEN

Posted over 3 years ago

Earl "Sixteen" Daley began his career with Augustus Pablo in the late Seventies, then had a fruitful association with Sir Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. In about 1992 he joined forces in far from clear circumstances with the exiled Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Scratch was less known than most JA producers for recycling his hit rhythms years after their initial success, so it might be thought somewhat unusual that his name is attached to these tracks, engineered by Syd Bucknor and released on the less than well known Seven Leaves Records, using tunes from nearly twenty years previously.

However, despite all the caveats, "Phoenix of Peace" turned out to be a stunning album, although sadly one that has vanished off the radar.

This track is a version of Bunny and Ricky's astonishing "Bushweed Corntrash", released on 45 in 1975

For those of you not familiar with the original, here is "Bushweed Corntrash" by Ricky & Bunny. Writer and singer Ricky Storme later became I.Kong, and had a huge hit LP with "The Way It Is" for Tommy Cowan's Talent Corporation in about 1979. Bunny Clarke recorded numerous soul covers for Lee Perry, then changed his name to Bunny Rugs, and sang lead with Derrick Harriott's old backing band the Crystalites, who had recently released their first LP under a new name

    THIRD WORLD.

I've got the Ricky & Bunny on a Scratch compilation, but Earl Sixteen does a lot more with it. And that dub trrack - wow! That drum sound is positively oceanic. Many thanks for this post....

Drummer was Mikey "Boo" Richards, who was Scrastch's favourite drummer of the late Seventies, and who played with Culture on their famous shows at thr London Rainbow Theatre in 1979 (the night when I completely failed to recognise Gregory Isaacs when he said "hello" on the way into the after show party, to my eternal shame)
