THIS TIME WITH SOUND

Posted about 1 year ago
Unquestionably the finest keyboard player in Jamaican history, Jackie Mittoo (1948-1990) was taught piano by his grandmother when he was four, and was already playing professionally at thirteen. By age fifteen, he was one of the studio arrangers at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, where he played on literally hundreds of unforgettable tracks. His legacy is incalculable. One of his greatest ever was "Peenie Wallie", on the same riddim as the Wailers "Duppy Conqueror". Opinions differ as to which tune copied which (Jamaican producers' desire to retain their top tunes for Sound System exclusivity can make release dates meaningless), but it spawned a couple of fine tunes on Studio One - "Duppy Serenade" by the Innkeepers, "Reggae Wiggle". He revisited the tune for Bunny Lee in 1977 as "Peace Treaty", then cut it for the last time in New York for Lloyd Barnes not long before his untimely death from cancer. This is the 1989 cut - TWO OLDER VERSIONS POSTED BELOW

  5. Baudolino says And this is a DJ version from about 1972 or '73. The voice here, rather copying the style of Dennis Alcapone, is in fact Bobby Kalphat, better known as a keyboard player
