and a slab of prime gospel from 1961, driven by Roebuck "Pop" Staples guitar and Mavis' lead vocals. Backing singers on this are Cleotha and Yvonne - Purvis was away doing his military duty

  2. Cody B says I dunno if I'd go quite as far as Ivy, but there is a consistent awesomeness in those early sides. It doesn't reach the peaks of some of the Stax material, but shines nonetheless, despite the awful sounding recordings I have.

  4. Cody B says I was mostly in agreement with you..The Staples albums on Stax are not my favorites. I like my monster singles, my solo Mavis, and the few Pops solo cuts on Stax...
