WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Saturday cover that also became a sample

Posted 8 months ago

The Count Basie Orchestra weren't at their commercial peak when they moved to Brunswick records in 1968, but they could still spot a catchy tune and make it their own. And so it came to pass that they recorded this cover of the McCoys' 1965 hit.

Many of you listening will, however, scratch your heads and say "I know that tune from somewhere else - but what is it?"

It is, of course, the main part of the backing track borrowed by the Dream Warriors for their 1990 hit "Wash Your Face in My Sink". I'm sure a few of you recognised it right away, but I'll bet some of you didn't. The tiny piano loop at the start sounds like it's off an old rocksteady tune, possibly Gladstone Anderson or Theo Beckford, but too short to tell with any certainty.

funny you should mention the dream warriors. I just had a co-worker ask me if I had any 90's hip hop that she had not heard of, I went home and brought that album the very next day. I so wish they would have made it bigger here in the states, one of canada's best hip hop acts as far as I am concerned.
