WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Sunday Under Covers with Delroy Wilson

Posted 6 months ago

Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's "We're All in This Thing Together" was by no means the best known song they wrote for the O'Jays in the Seventies; to this day it remains a lesser known Philly track, not to my knowledge released as a single.

However, in Jamaica, where the soul sounds of Philadelphia were much loved by the "Uptown" crowd, the tune came to the ears of Augustus "Gussie" Clarke, who in 1978 was actively pursuing commercial success with acts like Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs and Hortense Ellis, and he brought Delroy Wilson into the studio to cover it. For a truly classy singer, Delroy had a very "stop-start" career, with periods of vast success followed by spells of obscurity cutting 45s for smaller studios. The alcoholism that killed him at the age of only 46 in 1995 had a part to play in this. The late seventioes were one of his more successful periods, and he was a consistent hitmaker.

I've tacked on to this a dub cut called "Big Or Small", from a Gussie LP called "Black Foundation Dub", mixed by King Tubby and Philip Smart

Have to admit I was a little dubious about the prospect of listening to him covering some lesser known Philly track, but his treatment validated its worth as a song, and ended up being a keeper.  Good choice, Baudolino.
