As today is Mardi Gras

it's time to go back to the first full LP of Mardi Gras Indian music released, which was incidentally the first LP on which all four Neville Brothers performed together, along with the remaining members of the Meters. The songs were all credited to the writing skills of George Landry aka Big Chief Jolly (although in some cases this was a trifle generous, as many of the chants and melodies are unquestionably far older).
This track has since become something of a standard chant; I suspect its true origins are lost in the mists of time, but it remains as raw and elemental a vision of the historic battles between the "Indian tribes" as you will hear.
This is the Flag Boy of the Wild Tchoupitoulas

Do you know if the Wild Magnolias are still around? They used to be every Thursday night at the Funky Butt. Or did they change their name? Great Mardi Pardi post!
Well, they're certainly not playing in Clackmannanshire!
According to this -http://www.wildmagnolias.net/, they were gigging up until September last year, but there's nothing listed for 2009
I was in the army with a Paul Lapierre From N. Orleans. Went to Mardi gras (week) in '73, and again in '75-76...and then again in '96. I was amazed at how toned down things had become. But in the 70's folks were bitchin' that things had been toned down too much.......which made a young deadmandeadman wonder what it was like before it got toned down. I met Snooky Young at a party, he was datin' Paul's Sister. The music at the private parties was some of the finest I've ever heard.
The wild stuff still goes on, check out what you can find on Mom's Ball.
I'm sad they aren't playing in Clackmannanshire. Y'all need a Funky Butt of your own.
Loved this post! Thanks
