Reverend Claude Jeter 1914-2009

Posted about 3 years ago

News has only just reached me that, eighty years after he formed his first gospel harmony group, lead singer of the Swan Silvertones Reverend Claude Jeter died last month at the age of 94.

Blessed with a truly ethereal falsetto that contrasted with the rougher and deeper tones of Solomon Womack and Robert Crenshaw, he might easily have followed Sam Cooke into secular stardom, were it not that he'd promised his mother that he would only sing the praises of the Lord. Becoming an ordained minister in 1963, he gave up full-time gospel singing in 1967, but continued to record, and guest with the Swan Silvertones, for many years after that. This was recorded in their 1950s heyday, and was produced by Art Rupe.

And here, from their Specialty LP "My Rock", again under the watchful eye of Art Rupe, is "Motherless Child", credited here as being written by baritone vocalist John H Myles

These are beautiful. He had an amazing voice.  They were one of the great groups of their time.  Sorry not to respond sooner.  You might enjoy another "post":http://mog.com/Spike/blog/179866#comments.
