MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(59)

Some days ago, I came across this post by Carmensandiego and accepted her kind invitation like a message in a bottle.
Here's a track I've chosen as "smile-bringer"

It's always a delicate alchemy to come up with a decent mixtape for someone that you know. It's an almost impossible task when you're thinking about a complete stranger...

Anyway, I'm wondering if you distinguished Moggers still make mixtape. Do you have guidelines? A special recipe to make them? Do you make a special artwork etc? - Please do share.

for almost a year i started EVERY mixtape I made out with this song...the original sound of it and how it starts always seemed a perfect way to hook the listener

Sure I do . Well cd that is . I have an Mp3 but in the car I like my cd to fit my mood. I do make mix tapes for friends all the time .I kinda guess what to put on their depending on their tastes I might even throw something different on there to turn them on to something . Its always nice to open someones EARS .... to something new . As far as art work I think it adds that special flare to it . Like you went the extra mile for them ... Now if you are straight and making this for another straight man do not do this but if you are making this for someone you like then go all out .Its something they can keep for a long time put a nifty tittle to it as well.

i don't make "mix tapes" as much as i make "mix cds" now...but i love to share music and make mixes for new friends. it makes things a lot easier when you have some idea of what they like and don't like. i have a friend named Margaret and when we started hanging out i made her a cd of some of my favorite songs, including one by Camera Obscura called "Come Back Margaret." she loved it and now Camera Obscura is one of her favorite bands to listen to. it's fun to turn people on to new music and it's cute to use songs that have the name of the person you're making it for (as long as the person isn't being insulted) or some kind of theme...like a Halloween Mix, or a Summer Mix, or a Mix To Listen To While Having Sex... i also like to write down all the information on the cd (title, artist, etc) so they're not constantly going "what's the name of this song again?"

Yeah, I still make mixes. In fact, I need to get cracking on the mix for carmensandiego as well. To be honest, I have no talent for visual media, so I let the mix do the talking, and just list the songs on the cover.

Mostly, I'll start by listening to my collection on shuffle, then something will pop up that would fit the theme I have in mind. The mix kinda flows from there.

Needless to say, I fill mine as full as possible.

I've also gone the uber-geek route and picked favorite track 2's, or recently the natural order playlist. That was actually a fun one, that still sits in the CD player in the car.

I don't really make mix tapes/cds ... but this post has inspired me. today I want to make a mixtape for someone. or a playlist anyway. As to a song to cheer carmensandiego... I don't know why but this always puts a smile on my face, I'm not sure that was Jarvis' intention.

Ahhh, the mixtape ...

I don't know where to start on this topic, to be honest. So, to be respectful of the inbox, I'll just share a little vignette.

For a variety of reasons, I haven't made a mixtape in quite a while. Last night, though, I found one of my best (at least one of the best of recent vintage) while looking for a very special version of Cesaria Evora's "Sangue de Beirona." I have this special version in my collection, but since my collection has been boxed for several months (very long story), I cannot find it.

I'm rather distressed, to say the least.

But at least this hunt resulted in reacquainting myself with my mixtapes, and the joy I've always had in compiling them. You've inspired me to probe this subject a bit more, so I will at the SSE.

SatisfiedM: It's a great tune to hook someone up and inviting them to the rest of your mix. I like Ms Heap...so sonically alluring. (Don't worry about the typo - I'll hit some MOG deities and see if it's correctable)

Aummery: I'm so with you on that. With the "artwork" view available on iTunes and other softwares/mp3 players, I tend to sketch some easy PS editing as illustration for my mixes. Old habits die hard.

lilja: Thanks for your input. I agree with you. Mixtapes are an expression of what I like t call "selfish sharing." Pretty much like the MOG experience.

Dale: I really like your ideas of serendipitous mixtapes. Now I feel like I missed out on your natural order. This calls for a catch-up comment.

LG: "Common People" is one of those songs that'll always stay with me to make me smile. Thanks for refreshing my ears with Jarvis Cocker's rapier-sharp social comments.

Anna: Looks like I missed out on your posts too...

GA: The Subdudes sound just a fresh arse-kicking dawn in summer. Thanks for sharing.

Soultron:' You're a wicked hipster, Mr Cool of the mix. No doubt I'll hear more about your mixtapes.

My goodness, I can't believe I didn't mention Donovan in my reply. Sunny, you must think I'm a boor. I don't any excuse but that of bad editing skills.

Thanks and muchas gracias for the "love that you've got"
