Some Lusophone music for my imagination

[Madredeus - Alfama / 3:27]

Lusitania and her colonies have not only brought me many a dream but also provided the musical score to accompany my sleepless nights

Madredeus hails from Lisbon. The band was founded in the vicinity of the church of Madre de Deus, east of the famed Alfama quarter.

"Os Dias de Madredeus" was the first time their music entered my consciousness. And more than a mix of folk and fado, theirs was the score of my waking dreams

Here's a snippet of one of their earlier concert ("A Cidade" from the aforementioned album)

Thank you to Baudolino for inspiring this close-to-oniric remininiscing.

  1. ivylander says Really lovely. Much of the Madredeus I've heard sounded too proper and a bit Fado Lite, but this cut has a lot of mystery and heft. Once again, your ears have not failed you, or us.

  3. bloodtea says I bet that Lusitania you mention looks way better in your dreams... And I must say you introduced them beautifully on MOG (damn, you had to pick the best songs from this album!); bravo! Sigh.

  5. bloodtea says I had in mind a post about Portuguese intervention music, already... Lusophone-war?! Well... I wouldn't mind to say "I'm in"... but... it would be a shame if Iose, and not fair if I win... I mean... (__Ah whatever Andréa, let's go to bed, your brain hurts__)

  9. Baudolino says Nice tune, well sung, and less "poppy" than a lot of their records. I was in Alfama last year - "ramshackle" doesn't really go far enough to describe it. For me, it's best summed up by the sounds of Amalia's own "Alfama"

  10. HelenMarie says I'm in for the group hug. Having a few sleepless nights myself and this is perfect to twist the volume and drift on into a wide awake wonderland at 2am. Such lovely intense sounds seem so effortless by the singer.

  11. Bartleby says *Ivy*: I know what you mean. Truth be told, some of their more recent material sounds a bit too New Age for me as well. Here the strings really do it for me. *Lizzie*: I've never heard of Miranda but the name sounds most alluring. Pray tell, what may a sex garden be? *Bloodtea*: Sorry sister. I'm a charlatan for bringing Madredeus to MOG and in all fairness I'm sure you would have done a much better introduction than me. -- You know who's responsible for beautifying my personal Lusitania. *Cody*: You must blame Sir Baudolino for the Lusophone galore. *Lilja*: Glad you like, dear. *I am*: *Leftoverking*: Thanks for the comments. Really glad that you like Madredeus. As some people said, their music may be a bit "New Wave" but "Ainda" and "Os Dias de Madredeus" are worth a listen. *Baudolino*: The "poppiness" is almost invisible when they play live. I guess it's got more to do with their record label wanting to please the mainstream than their true aspiration. -- Thank you ever so much for the Amalia Rodrigues' track. She's amazing as always. *Sunny*: Music is my most faithful companion in my sleepless nights. -- Group hug it is then. (clickyhere)
