[Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (BBC Live Sessions) / 3:52]

One does not always travel to the sound of music but one does come home with memories of songs and people.

And so it was for your humble servant when visiting Amsterdam. Amidst the excess of beer and cheers (can anyone have too much mirth?) shared with friends, a song stuck with me like those seeds which you bring home nilly-willy.

Café 't Molentje

It came slowly and with the familiarity of an old pal...At first, I didn't notice the voice then slowly, the full face emerged in her raspy suaveness. Yes, the song was "Back To Black."

As our clique was the only patrons there and then, I dared ask the lovely waitresses if they had "Wake Up Alone." They kindly obliged.

To Remie and Roos and to the city of Amsterdam, I'd like to say: "Dankjewel." - Here's a live version of the song you seemed to enjoy so much. I hope it'll sound new and pleasant to you.

(Apologies to Amsterdam, I didn't give you enough time nor attention to your wonderful canals and people - Blame it on the booze and the party)

  1. Bartleby says This one goes out to F., J., V., Y. - you know the true meaning of friendship. To the two naiads who were kind enough to teach me some Dutch ;)

  7. ivylander says You brought home seeds? Your Amsterdam musical memory is far happier than mine. On the first afternoon of my last visit, alone and very lost while looking for an Indonesian restaurant a friend had recommended and feeling barely alive, I ducked out of a midafternoon drizzle and into a rather rough-looking cafe. It was one of those where all patrons are hostage to the bartender's musical tastes. On this particular afternoon he had taken it into his head that he wanted to hear Peaches and Herb's "Reunited." For six consecutive plays. It still feels like the most vivid bad dream I've ever had.

  8. Augusts1 says Sounds like you must've had a fab time, glad to hear it. I'm not a fan of Winehouse. Admire her voice but not the style, but that's just me.

  10. FluxCapacitor says I love Amsterdam. I met The Strokes on the street there and had a "stop and chat.". Lovely song, glad you enjoyed your break.

  11. dermahrk says Well, at least it was a bit different. Every time I go into a coffee bar in Amsterdam they are playing Bob Marley. It is very strange to sit in a public establishment, buying and smoking certain materials. Not sure if that's the kind of ??Cafe?? you went to.

  12. Bartleby says *SA*: Thanks for popping in. I seem to remember that you do speak Dutch ;) *Avenue*: Hey, long time no post. It's always nice to see you around. Amsterdam is worth the visit. Hurry up, the Red Light District will soon cease to exist (not that's what I was looking for but it seems a shame that the authorities want to erase this part of the cultural history of the city) *BloodT*: Who's jealous of who again? -- Funk-fu soon. *DMDM*: Thanks for tuning in. -- I really like what you've done with the etching. *Xhable*: Cheers - it was a bit short. *Ivy*: I wanted to but cowardice got the better of me. The funny thing about globalisation is that you tend to hear the same music pretty much everywhere you go. At least it was enjoyable -- I feel your pain too. *Auggie*: I know what you mean but Winehouse does grow on you somehow. Thanks for popping in. *Cody*: You're too kind... Amsterdam is a incredibly friendly city too. *FluxC*: So did you ask Julian Casablancas to introduce you to the local models eager to work for his dad? Being in show business yourself, I'm sure you could have ushered them in the right "milieu." *Derm*: The café I went to didn't serve that kind of coffee but I know what you mean. Marley is everywhere in Amsterdam, on the walls, on the air, on people's clothes... A lot of things have been said about ganja but one thing is sure: originality is not to be expected. -- Also, I've heard that after the Red Light District, the current mayor wants to take on the coffee shops. Apparently, the man doesn't appreciate that kind of tourism.

  13. poebegone says ahh-Amsterdam. it is a favorite city of a few of my favorite people. the charming little bookstores are not to be missed, i am told. (the ganja-laced comestibles are everpresent in my city.) thanks for the secondary-trip, Michael.

  14. fistula spume says You know what they say Bartleby. If your not Dutch your not much! Is the bicycle in that picture a prop paid for by the cafe? It looks so well placed. Does it get any better than beer, food, friends, and music?

  18. goodmusiconly says Amsterdam, in the company of naiads, beer, and friends ... you know how to go on holiday, my friend!

  19. Bartleby says *Poe*: I was a virgin to the Netherlands and Amsterdam before my little. My only regrets is that I didn't get to much sight-seeing given the time my pals and I spent in bars and cafés... I'm glad I could have shared a hint of the real thing with you, Ilay. *Fistul'*: As you it doesn't get better than beer, friends and cheers... Re the Café 't Molentje I had to ask one the sylphs to write down its name - I'm not sure about the bike. Truth be told, I didn't take that photo (yeah, I'm just thief). *Sunny*: I've got a weakness for "Back to Black" as it is the first song I heard from Ms Winehouse... Nice of you to bring some of your sunshine along these shores. *Neill*: This is just too good to be true. I can only imagine the "make-up malfunction" explanation if the eye-liner had run. Thanks for this brilliant piece of news. *Scot*: Thanks for the kudos. I'm sure you'd have felt at home in the city on the Amstel river. *GMO*: Believe it not but my friends told me that both naiads fancied me... Thanks for popping in.
