[Lou Reed/John Cale - Small Town / 2:04]

The first creation of an artist is themselves as Warhol proved through his life.

I must confess I know little about Andrew Warhola's childhood, or if you prefer calling him POP Art Pope, Andy Warhol. One can only imagine that as a sickly and pale-looking child growing up in a small suburb of Pittsburgh, young Andrew could not have really cared much for his birth place.

If "dying is the most embarrassing thing that can ever happen to you (because someone's got to take care of all your details") it must also be the greatest irony of all.

Entrance to the Andy Warhol Museum - Pittsburgh, PA

What would have Andy Warhol thought of the Andy Warhol Museum or the Andy Warhol Bridge, both in Pittsburgh? – I think he would have loved the canonisation, as it were.

(About "Small Town:" "The piano on it conjures up images of old-fashioned "physical culture" demonstrations , callisthenics, muscle men, that sort of thing. Damned if I can say exactly why. Must be an old, old TV cliché. All things Andy would appreciate." - AA Coppertop)

  1. bloodtea says Andy Warhol's not quite my _thing_. But I do have nice thoughts of him when The Velvet Underground or Flesh For Frankenstein (a.k.a. Andy Warhol's Frankenstein) pop in my head.

  2. ivylander says Pennsylvanians tend to overcompensate when they get to Manhattan. Warhol, John Updike, Art Cooper....

  3. AA Coppertop says Maybe Art Cooper should have overcompensated a little more. I had to Google him, and I'm still not sure whether or not the ever-droll ivylander is using him as a punchline. On the other hand, I'm reading about Art Cooper now, and am better for it. From an interview with him: >Q: Apart from looks, what makes a woman attractive to you? >A: When I was a young man, I had a mentor on women and he said when you meet a woman that you think you like, don't ask her for a drink. Take her out for a bowl of soup. Because a woman who can enjoy a bowl of soup is bound to be more interesting. ... Privately, I'm mildly disappointed to see that the Warhol Museum is housed in a building of Classical-type architecture. I'd always pictured something sleek and modern. ... Warhol went to Catholic mass every Sunday with his Mom, who lived with him. ... Thanks for the tune, and for the quotation, Bartleby.

  4. ivylander says Wasn't saying Cooper was great. But he was an overcompensator. Apparently pretty much anyone who was a Penn State football fan could get a job at GQ. Sadly, I learned this too late....

  8. fistula spume says My town can't wait to canonize anything. Oh if only someone famous would come from here so we could erect a monument. I like the Cale/Reed song. Like the post too. I like Andy but I'm also a whore for anything New York art related it seems.

  9. lilja88 says Andy Warhol and Lou Reed go together so well. Like peanut butter and jelly. I grew up in a VERY small town. I'm still trying to leave. Have you seen Factory Girl?

  10. Bartleby says *BloodT*: I must I have mixed feelings regarding Andy myself. But I do like his visual and films. *Ivy*: "Apparently pretty much anyone who was a Penn State football fan could get a job at GQ. Sadly, I learned this too late...." - Now, why students are not told about this before they choose their universities? *AA*: As I said, I was more than happy to oblige. *Max*: I found the whole album rather touching actually. Especially "A Dream." *Liza*: Hi Liza. Thanks for popping in and for your kind comments. *Fistula*: I've never heard of "canonisation fodder" before but I guess everyone is happy to bathe in others' aura of fame. *Lilja*: VU and Andy are a match made in heaven. I wish I could have seen the show and art performance he designed with and for them: the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. - Sorry, I'm not really bothered about Ms Miller...
