God Bless The Child (under the cover)

Posted about 1 year ago
[Blood, Sweat & Tears - God Bless The Child / 5:54] Domenico Ghirlandaio, Old Man and Child, Musée du Louvre (1490-1493)
"God Bless The Child" is arguably one of the most poignant and personal songs in Billie Holiday's repertoire. Written in 1941 with Arthur Herzog following a row with her mother, this song tells not only the story of despondency which was Billie's early life but also her hope in a child's strength to survive injustice.
You can therefore imagine that covering such a powerful song is no easy task but Dick Halligan's arrangement managed to conjure up its own wistfulness, with the help of David Clayton-Thomas's voice.
For those who'd like to re-listen to Billie's voice, it's available in the comments.

  5. fanessa1 says Blood, Sweat & Tears CD sitting right next to me, best song ever "I love you more than you'll ever know" Lover Man Where Can You Be, is my favorite by Billie D. Among my favorite female singers is Ertha Kitt, Lena Horne, Pearl Bailey whom my mother sang back for on A Tisket, A Tasket, A Green and Yellow Basket. I have a picture of my mom in custome from that time on myspace page. Nessa

  7. FastRMacR says Incredible - I was just listening to this B, S, & T - deep - two nights ago. I grew up on this. My Da embarrassed me years ago - had a live jazz singer sing this tune for me. Needless to say it's sort of a theme song - thanks for both of these tracks.

  9. Augusts1 says Now that was quite an incredible version of the original that they truly made their own. Hard to outdo Billie but I think B, S & T may have succeeded.

  11. Bartleby says *Ngtiv*: Glad Billie's voice gently rocked your rainy day. *MusikFriend*: I won't disagree with you on B, S & T's version. It's by far the best bar Billie's, of course. *DMDM*: Billie is by far the artist of choice for this song. Still, B, S & T aren't too shabby either. Give them a chance. *Nessa*: Happy to oblige, dear. (Do you need to be registered on myspace to view your page? i've tried but couldn't see anything) *Xhable*: I feel you. Happy to share some B,S & T who are worth everyone's consideration. *FastR*: Serendipity. If great minds think alike, do great big ears sing alike? Sometimes our parents' music does grow on and with you whether you're aware of it or not. *Bartmerr*: Thank you so much for popping in and lending me your ears. ;) *August*: The modal is key isn't it? Glad I could share some B, S & T with you even though it was through a cover. *Anna*: Well, if this has helped feel a little better then my work is done ;)

  12. RSchaut says I've been working on a "Cover Me Up" iTunes play list for a while, and this rendition of God Bless the Child was one of the first songs on it. Takes cajones to even try, though BS&T were never really at a loss in that particular department. Just, this time, they succeeded. Come to think of it, this is the only post-Al Kooper BS&T song I still listen to. I agree with Fanessa about More than You'll Ever Know.
