THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Leap Year

Posted about 1 year ago
365.242375 days in a (vernal equinox) year. 18 days and 6 hours and more of encoded music in my library. 29 hours and 38 minutes before the year ends. 2 minutes and 31 seconds in this song.
192 words to tell you about Sarabeth Tucek.

33 years before we hear her delicate song-writing on the debut album: "Sarabeth Tucek." – The eponymous title is not a lack of inspiration but a sign of self-assertion from this sensuous swan whose voice has previously graced songs penned by Anton Newcombe (of the infamous Brian Jonestown Masscacre) or Bill Callahan ("Supper" with his Smog alter-ego.)
Looking at the perfect profile adorning the cover of her album, memories of Nico and Joni Mitchell come to mind. Her fragile and affectionate sound also recalls another silhouette: Cat Power’s. However, Sarabeth has her own voice. Her songs carry a frailty of the world on their broken chords. The lyrics gently stirring the dust of experiences which make up life – without brushing off their marks.
Finally, these 121 signs to tell you I’m looking forward to seeing our millions and millions of dreams and aspirations come to fruition in 2008.

  5. ivylander says Yep, early Nico is the reference point here, but it's a starting point not the destination. Very nice cut. A year of blessings to you, Michael....

  6. scotfree says A unique personality shines through the echoes of Mitchell-Nico-Cat and make this an aural treasure, B. May your '08 be as eloquent and pleasurable as all the great posts you've penned for us this year!!

  7. dermahrk says How timely! Last night I read a review of her CD in the latest issue of The Word. It made her sound as enticing as her appearance. And here you are! That, my friend, is service. You know, the other day Ivylander made a comment on my post about Big Joe Turner dealing with his lack of mass market appeal due to his appearance. I thought "Yes, how horrible and shallow!". But I pay a LOT more attention to attractive female singers. It's more than music, it's biology. I like that second track a bit more because of its jangly nature. But both are fine.

  12. Augusts1 says Her vocal delivery reminds me alot of Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star especially on the 2nd song(as well as the music on the 2nd), which is a good thing in my book. Nice find.

  13. Max Load says That's nice. Will listen to some more.
It came out a bit quiet for some reason, but I think I detected very Velvet Underground guitar. And the tambourine was pure Velvets too.

  16. Bartleby says Let's begin the countdown ;)

Xhable: Cheers mate. You too have a super new year. Joxley: Ms Tucek will certainly agree with you. Thanks for popping around. Best of wishes. Musikfriend: Glad you like it. Thank you for all your posts - mine pale in comparison. Ivy: I agree with you. The accents of Nico heard here and there bode well for Ms Tucek who's one my artists to look up in 2008. Scotfree: When you're an inspiring female singer-song-writer, comparisons are inevitable. There are lesser people to be name-checked by. Glad you've enjoyed and thanks for your special comments. Derm: As a matter of fact, I wish I could write for The Word. It's only normal that great minds think alike, innit? I agree with you on the looks also although it's no criterium for me. I just think people like Ms Tucek are blessed (for those who have shall have more). Levek: Thanks for visiting these shores. Meilleurs voeux à toi Hoppy: You're very welcome - this is what MOG is for: discovering music of all genres to please your ears Mike: Glad you found this offering pleasurable. Cheers mate and best wishes to you ;) August: Hope does come to mind also. Isn't it incredible that her sound is so evocative for a baptismal release? Maybe being 33 and taking the time to write your material helps ;) Max Load: The more you'll listen, the more you're likely to be under her spell. Fistula: Hey, I'm glad Ms Tucek caught your expert ears. Best of wishes for 2008 ;) Madrid: Ms Tucek's got something going for her, doesn't she? Cheers. Here's to you and a magnificent 2008.

  17. TylerDurden says happiest new year to you....I liked "blowin kisses" the best....makes me feel like walking through a field with a knapsack over my shoulder with absolutely no destination other than where my heart tells me to stop....

  18. Bartleby says *Tyler*: Thanks. May 2008 bring you much music and mirth - Glad you enjoyed Ms Tucek's. Did you know that before dedicating herself to music, she once pursued a career in acting? You may have seen her in "Flatlners" and "Midnight Edition" where she had minor parts.

  19. TylerDurden says can't say that I have seen those, but consider the knowledge you convey to be safely tucked away for future references at the local movie rental hole in the wall...is that a recommendation from you??
