MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

The ineffable elegance of a gentleman: Jimmy Scott

Posted about 1 year ago
[Jimmy Scott - Dearest Darling - 2:58- ca 1952]
Do you remember that missed rendez-vous? The one I'll never regret enough. I remember forgetting a meeting with a true gentleman who can be only described as suave. It was over two months ago. It is time to make amends.

Jimmy Scott was born some 82 years to share his infinite elegance - a soulful sadness coruscating with happiness - with the world. What many would be tempted to call a curse - Kallmann's syndrome - he accepted and used as a blessing.
His distinctive high soprano-like voice would suffice to "touch you in your deepest parts and even find spots that you never know you had" as Doc Pomus said. Add to this his incredible delivery: a gentle slowness which depicts all the colours of the human soul. Jimmy Scott's music possesses this inexpressible melancholy, a sumptuous solace for the hearts - which leads in many an oblique ways to that bitter sweet tenderness also called happiness.
Now if you'll accept my invitation, listen. Listen to the profound and pathetic songs of the elegant gentleman Jimmy.
I've been told 'tis the time for giving so you'll find 3 bonus tracks in the comments.

[Jimmy Scott - I'll Be Around - 2:33 - ca 1967] [Jimmy Scott - Jealous Guy - 5:23 - 2001] Isn't it amazing how his voice preserved the delicate timbre through the years? (Request line: this is for Dachmo who wanted to hear and post some Jimmy Scott from the 50s)

  3. fistula spume says Beautiful stuff Bartleby. I love Jimmy Scott. I bought Holding Back The Years when it came out. Someone stole it from me. Seems like it had a nice letter in the front from Lou Reed about Jimmy. I too wanted to hear some of the older works. Sounds really nice. Thanks for posting the tracks. Top notch post.

  5. Spike says Beautiful description of a great singer. He must have had an aversion to fast tempos. Whoa, I just realized that last one is a John Lennon song!

  11. Jonh Ingham says Just listened to 'Jealous Guy'. I wonder if Lennon heard it this way? ;- ) It's like a battle of the spaces between Jimmy and the pianist - I think it's a draw.

  12. Bartleby says Dzen: So nice to see you here. Peace to you and your family. ( Jimmy should be name-checked as often as possible ;) Fistula: I remember your mentioning you'd post something about Mr Scott too. I'm sure yours would have been much better. I'm only glad I could share his music with you. GA: Jimmy's story is indeed film material. I haven't been to watch it yet but I've heard great comments on the documentary on his life: If You Only Knew - which you must already know about. Spike: Thanks for coming by these shores. Yes, it's a Lennon's song. I thought people would be interested in hearing yet another re-creation by Jimmy. Here's another one which people were kind enough to comment on: http://mog.com/Bartleby/blog_post/120941 misskunk: Nice of you to pop around. It's my pleasure to be able to share this with you. Jonh: A lively treasure too. The man is 82 and still tours. You're right about Jimmy's characteristic lagging behind the music but he always ends right on cue with the pianist. There's a famous anecdote of Mingus hiring him and being so pissed off with Jimmy because he was late behind the band he walked out of the studio. - It's a good question: would Lennon have approved of this version? Mike: Infinitely lovely too. Wouldn't you agree? I'm glad you like this mini selection. Zepponoir: I see the Silver Surfer likes it. Thanks for popping around this side of MOG. Ivy: Well, what about simply sumptous?
