A MOG Halloween (Treat)

Posted about 1 year ago

'twas the night before Halloween. Dusk came earlier looking for autumnal mischief. Though there were no jack-o'-lanterns in the air, you could sense the dead had arisen and were walking with their distinctive empty glares...
They would have looked good in a t-shirt like the one above...

An incidental note on Dracula: Prince of Darkness, 1966:
Before Francis Ford Coppola and his baroque vision of blood and loss, after Nosferatu and its expressionistic sketches of a fog-like apparition, there was Terence Fisher's frightening exposé on the allure of darkness and its hyper-eroticised creature known as Count Dracula.
Christopher Lee gave him his carnal principality on the screen. Never before or since has a Dracula been so overtly sexual...

  1. Bartleby says A while ago, I was told I'd been selected for a "profile" in the MOG-Gazette. The icing on the cake for being an amateur music listener was the t-shirt you can see in the post. I'd like to thank all the people of MOG (especially Kate and Meg). For Halloween I got quite a nice treat ;) I wish I had someone to model and wear it for you... Unfortunately Lily Cole had other commitments :P

  5. lilja88 says why don't you model the t-shirt yourself?? haha i like how it's strategically placed on top of the union jack... happy halloween! :)

  6. Dzendvokh says Congrats, Nice track selection. Oh and if you are interested there's a new mogger "carolyn":http://mog.com/Carolyn_O%27Brien who just got her masters in music and is posting the hell out of some classical pieces. She also wrote a long response on my Bach post in the comments. She actually studied the Chaccone, she knows what she's talking about. Cheers

  8. brendanhalpin says I still remember staying up late at a friend's house (after my friend went to bed) and watching two Christopher Lee Dracula movies. There was one where he cuts open his chest with his fingernail and compels the comely maiden to drink the blood that comes trickling out. It may have been the single dirtiest thing I ever saw on TV.

  12. Bartleby says Thank you everyone for your comments. This was just a thank you post for the people of MOG. They are truly generous people. Scot: I found the flag in my treasure trunk... Thanks for visiting this MOG-closet. The profile is long past and gone. Fortunately. DMDM: Cheers. Augustus1: Glad you like it. (It took 2 weeks for me and I live on the other side of the pond.) Lilja: I'm afraid I'm allergic to pictures of myself. Besides, your presence really adds graciousness to this MOG-closet. It'd be a shame to ruin everything with my personal modelling ;) Dzen: Thank you for introducing me to Carolyn. FluxC: Sorry about the Union Jack. I wanted a kind of colourful background for a quick snap. Thanks for visiting. Soulrocket: Your presence on these shores is a true honour. Madrid S S: Sorry about the flag... No comments about Gibraltar either ;) Sabina: Hello and welcome to this MOG-hut. It's a bit crammed and rank but make yourself at home.

  13. Anna says I couldn't agree more. Nosferatu was primitive, Coppola's Dracula was too sappy (maybe I'm too strict 'cause Dracula is my favourite book of all time), but Christopher Lee managed to ooze sexuality. Sweet T-shirt. Happy Halloween.

  14. brendanhalpin says Oh, I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't like Christopher Lee. When I said that movie was the dirtiest thing I ever saw on TV, I meant it as a compliment!

  15. HelenMarie says "I’m afraid I’m allergic to pictures of myself" Were you biten by Dracula himself...Do you see an image when you look in the mirror? Pictures can hold perfect memories of good times and can put some things into different perspective...you should warm up to the camera a bit, at least for memories sake.

  17. Bartleby says Anna: Your presence in this MOG-closet is a true privilege. I saw "Dracula: Prince of the Darkness" at the age of 9 or 10 and it's still my favourite on-sreen adaptation. Bram Stoker's novel is also one of those seemingly too well-known books worth a (re-) read. Brendan: My apologies. Terence Fisher's vision of sex and gore is indeed a dirty delight. Sunny: Thanks for popping around this corner of MOG. Memories are made of re-creation - photographs are too pristinely preserved bits of time. Besides, I've got these MOG posts to remind me of the dates now ;)
