Brothers and Sisters: a sociable introduction

Posted over 2 years ago
A friend of mine has recently invited me to a party where we would introduce siblings to one another. Not our own but brothers and sisters who have decided to expand their kinship into music.
So here am I at your doorstep and as advised I have not come alone. Shall I make the introduction?

Everyone, this is Brothers and Sisters. Here is Will and Lily Courtney. A brother and his sister who have decided to extend their brotherly love to their bandmates: Marie Butcher, Greg McArthur, Dave Morgan, James Olsen, Dan Wilcox and Conrad Keely. - Who is who? And who plays what? Except for the lead vocals provided by Will, your guess is as good as mine.

Now I feel a bit awkward talking about their music in their presence. I shall only say that their self-titled and self-produced debut album is a bold collection of cosmic gems (Old Love Letters - streamable on their MySpace) and astral sparks (Lost and Found - in the comments)
Enough talking, my fingers are dry and parched from the banter... Let's listen to some brotherly sounds, shall we?

...there is something on this song with its susurrating reverberations and Will's vaulting lunar vocals which takes us to another stratophere.
Bonus: a bitter-sweet visual candy called "One Night"Brothers And Sisters "One Night" music video

  1. Bartleby says As promised, the delicately rough sparks of track 8.
Those who like name-dropping will find their biography by Will Sheff (Okkervill River). The same will comfort themselves in the comparisons that some have made between Brothers and Sisters and Gram Parsons and the Jayhawks...to mention just a few.
Special thanks to Strawberry Street for inspiring this post

  2. Strawberry Street says Aww Shucks! This is very folksy, the vocals ("vaulting lunar vocals" great description!) are great and the girls harmony works perfectly with the mood of the song. 'Without You' - Such a great love song, with hint of melancholy.

  3. lilja88 says I have become quite fond of folk. That song you posted called "Without You" reminds me of a more modern and streamlined version of Neil Young. I wanted to post his song "Round and Round" but I can't figure out how to upload MP3's. So here's another classic that I borrowed from someone else's MOG:

  5. shinsaholic says hadn't heard of them before but if Will Sheff's a fan then that's good enough for me!

  6. scotfree says Can we start the adoption proceedings please? I'd like to keep these guys around the house as accompaniment to any activities. We serve dinner promptly at 5:30, but I'm sure we can arrange your meals a bit earlier so you can practice whilst the non-musicians have their repast. Another glorius presentation B, I think I'll increase your allowance.

  7. Cody B says Without you is very spacious (I guess that's my lunar). Plenty of room to drift. One Night more straight forward, but the vocal interplay makes it work for me. The chorus slays on Lost and Found..I'd say a lot more Jayhawks than Graham, and better voices than either. Thanks so much for all the info, and the complete picture. Seems like they'd be fine house guests.

Bartleby says - It's always a surprise to see so many of you respond so fondly to my mercurial posts - Strawberry St: Many thanks indeed for giving me an opportunity to talk about this little band. Glad you enjoy it. Lilja: I'm sure Brothers And Sisters would not recoil from your kind comparison with Neil Young. Thanks the tune. Dermahrk: English bulldogs have good tastes ;) Shinsa: Will Sheff and the band often cross path in Austin. Thanks for popping around this MOG-closet.
