WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Jesus Saves, I Spend...my days with Annie

Posted over 2 years ago

How fortunate are they who have met her! How blessed are the people whom she has worked with! How dreamy-eyed am I whenever I hear Annie's voice. (I do fall in love too easily - vocally in love)
Of course choosing for oneself a name which sounds so masculine would not agree with many a soul. But re-christening oneself after the saint of wine making or if your prefer a Caribbean island is perhaps a way of eluding quick categorisation.
Many things have been said about Annie Clark, not least here in the MOG-o-sphere. Maybe I'll share with you my favourite piece of a legend in the making:
"Annie built her first guitar out of cardboard and rubber bands at age 5. Shortly thereafter, she learned to bang on it and sing with it at the same time. Accompanied by a 6-string electric cello, laptop, and drums, 24-year old Annie has been building a buzz opening for acts as acclaimed and diverse as Television, Tuck & Patti, Tracy+the Plastics, and Xiu Xiu."

...Now picture yourself in a lift. Enters Annie, like a ghost of Anna Karina. She looks at you from inside the Alphaville box. Then she will enter your flat, lay on your bed and strum gently and susurrate : "Marry me."

Would you, could you say no?

  1. scotfree says Well B, this was an year of a different shade for me. Prior to '07, rarely listened to the ladies. Sure, I've got some old Supremes vinyl, some Maria Muldaur, lived a Blondie phase. But they were always few and far between. But starting with the Japanese songstree Yuki, and perhaps in no small measure due to mog, it's a 180 - was gonna list em,but I think you know what I mean. They just keep getting better and better (St Vincent in point)! Most of her vids I've seen (is it all?) featurre these kind of live performance clips - so much more involving and inspiring than the typical mimed eye feast. This is incredible. Thanks!

  3. Strawberry Street says I LOVE this! I have never even heard of her before but I'm rushing to check it out. My list of 'have to get' is getting bigger since I've discovered MOG! I can't keep up but I want to so much...

  4. Bartleby says Scot: I was like you. Most of my main "acts" were men and I'm beginning to appreciate the feisty features that women offer on vocals now. Does it mean that femininity is more eagerly accepted as we get older? Darm': Hi there and thank you for the additional information. I think I overlooked this reference to the poetess St. Vincent Millay. I guess you can draw a parallel between the two proud and fiery women. Thanks also for El Perro del Mar link. Soulrocket: Your city is Zaragoza? Nice of you to pop around. Strawberry St: Glad, I could share this with you. My musical expenses have indeed increased since I joined MOG. PS: Those who are interested one-persons band will find this post most most provoking.
