[Paavoharju - PaavoharHän teki minut autioksi / 4:05]

Spring thaws not only the minds but also the hundreds of thousands of lakes in Finland. The light changes make the air quiver with the soaring sap.

Through the woods, gliding over water lilting murmurs can be heard out of the sylvan silence. This breathing music is the sound that I would like to introduce you to.

Hailing from the castle city of Savonlinna, surrounded by lakes Paavoharju centres around brothers Olli & Lauri Ainala and Jenni Koivistoinen, assisted by members/collaborators Toni Kähkönen, Joose Keskitalo, Johannes Pitkänen, Emmi Uimonen, Jussi Lahti, Lari Lätti, Gabriel Ainala.—I was immediately subjugated by their sonic mixture of "atmospherica" and esoterica when I heard their demo "Hän teki minut autioksi" back in 2003.

Little did I suspect that their witch's whispers would evolve to encompass all influences from folk to Bollywood music and church hymns to dream pop and even musique concrète. Their press book states: "Paavoharju's music is the outcome of long time, intense study of art and literature, dreams, religious despair and living in dark abandoned places."

This syncretism however does not preclude a strong sense of place. Like great Nordic artists, Paavoharju "dig where they stand."

More info here and here.

I lack the talent for metaphors which would convey the scope of Paavoharju's sound to you. So here are two tracks from their début album "Yhä Hämärää" (2005 - click here to read Pitchfork's review)

[Paavoharju - Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi / 4:01]

[Paavoharju - Ilmaa Virtaa / 2:48]

Here's also a folksy excerpt from their 2008 EP, which can also be found on their latest release "Laulu Laakson Kukasta" on Fonal Records

Thanks Michael.... I agree, despite the various influences I think this is still very evocative of place....I like it!

Promise to listen later - right now I am listening to Clem Snide & he's sheer perfection on my ears today... how did I not get more of his music sooner - why do I not know EVERYTHING there is to know about him - when is he next coming to Philly - will he marry me ?!?

Sometimes it seems that nonsense is the only possible response to the absurd (hint)

When it comes to balderdash, no one is more qualified than Professore Celentano. Listen to his lesson in inanity

Girl: Listen, Professore.
Professore: Yes, tell me.
Girl: Why did you write a song with strange words which don't mean anything...?

Please forgive my very rusty Italian.

Sorry everyone, looks like notifications have delayed for me

Aug: The video is from the 70s. Over 30 years. Adriano Celentano is now 70 and was in his prime quite a renaissance man. He wrote quote a few songs that didn't mean anything but mimicked American rock-soul-funk. The popular hits of the moment.

Zeroskilz: Thanks for popping in. Glad you like it. I think your handle is a misnomer ;)

[Rhianna - Word Love (4hero remix)/ 4:08]

I met Rhianna on the sullen summer of 2002. I was immediately drawn to her silky vocals which made my dog days seem like spring and dewy grass.

Three years later, a young and very faint voice caught my attention under the overpounding beats of "Pon de Replay." Hearing the familiar name, I thought: "That's an unexpected change of direction. From sultry R&B to über-dancehall."

I was pleased to hear about Rhianna's success until I realised that wasn't her. It was Rihanna, a hyper-glamorised-overnubile lassie mass-marketed by the Citizen Kane of hip-pop Jay-Z.

I never heard of her since that day.

So who's that girl? -- Rhianna (h before i) is native of Leeds and enjoyed a twee success in the UK. (More about her on Wiki). The other Rihanna (i before h) overshadowed her under her infamous "umbrella."

Sometimes, spelling makes the selling?

Note: this is a repost from 11th May original. It seems that all posts and comments have disappeared into the ether... Thought some people might still enjoy it.

Below is the appended comment to Sunday's post:
Because it's Sunday, here's her take on a Stevie Wonder's hit

For the purists, here's also the unfiltered version of "Word Love"
