WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Toad The Wet What??

Posted over 2 years ago
I was looking at the concert line up for the county fair this year and saw that Toad The Wet Sprocket and Guster were playing. I had to get tickets. High School just wouldnt have been the same without Toad. 7:00 p.m. - $8 beer in hand, free local radio station cd in the other, walking to my seat, The 88 on stage playing the third song that sounds just like the first, me staring into the crowd wondering if half these kids even know who Toad The Wet Sprocket even are.7:15 p.m. - The 88 arent great but they do know how to play variations of one song pretty well. 7:20 p.m. - Okay, are about 1/3 full and Toad is set to go on in about 10 minutes. Shoulda guessed that in Orange County everyone would be late or be in the fair eating rather than watching a decent act.7:35 p.m. - Im out of beer. Ill be back after I go through the loan application and approval process. 7:40 p.m. - I guess the advantage of nobody showing up is I can get a beer in 5 min. I like that.7:45 p.m. - Before Toad plays their first song they thank the crowd for showing up at their first show in about a year and a half...At the FAIR. Yeah, they know they arent as popular as they once were. At least they are still having fun. 7:55 p.m. - They might not be as popular as they used to be, but they still sound good. The teenagers who were barely alive in the Toad hey day, are screaming out song titles at every break. I think they have the first three albums covered. 8:05 p.m. - Glen Philips busts out a solo song. I just might have to pick up one of his albums, it's not half bad.8:12 p.m. - Now the venue is filling up. About 2/3 of the place is full now. I just realized... Nobody is here to see Toad. Everyone wants to see Guster. I feel old.8:30 p.m. - Randomly Toad breaks into Freebird for a few bars. They could have a short career as a Skynyrd cover band. 8:35 p.m. - Toad finishes up their set with Whatever I Fear and bid us all farewell. 15 years or so Ive wanted to see a Toad show. It was what I expected it to be. I've seen Guster about 7 years ago. I'll stick around to see how they have progressed.8:45 p.m. - Guster comes out. The lead singer looks like Matthew Mconaughy would if he never worked out...ever. They too understand they are playing the fair. By the looks of the crowd, they havent grown in popularity since I saw them 7 years ago. The venue is still only 2/3 full. 9:00 p.m. - Guster has now played both songs I ever knew. Everything else sounds like something I've heard before. Is it just me or is Guster the Matchbox 20 version of Phish? 9:07 p.m. - I'm out of beer and I need a funnel cake. I'm outta here! I would see Toad again at a small venue. They were exactly what I remember.

  2. MusicIsMyLife says The 88 is that band that covered the Violent Femmes version of "Good Feeling" on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER on the prom episode. I thought their songs were good and decided to look them up when I got home. In fact, I thought their energy and performance was better than both bands that night. Toad was just as boring as I remember. Talk about all their songs sounding the same! Jesus Christ. I was there to see Guster, and I actually left early cause I was so disappointed in their set. The whole Phish thing blew it for me. Has anybody listened to the new Rilo Kiley record?

  5. missjunk says Thanks for that play by play action. You are so lucky to get Toad at your fair. We had Cheap Trick. Which still suck. Anyways, I love the fair. Where else can you get a MonkeyTail??? (frozen bananas covered with chocolate/nuts on a stick)

  6. debi says Love your review - I'm heading to "HippieFest" tomorrow night at a local outdoor venue. I don't even know who's playing - its more about the lawn , the blanket, the beer and the people watching. Hoping we get as lucky at our beer lines tomorrow!

  7. Lizziegreeneyes says Definitely pick up Glen's solo stuff... or if you can wait - I'll get it up on Multiply as soon as I get things figured out with my library - unfortunately it may be a while - may have to reupload all my albums... about 10,000 songs or so that I've gotten up there !!! UGH !!! But yeah, I love all his stuff & he puts on a hell of a solo show - my only sadness - he no longer goes shoeless (for the most part) & I love him shoeless ;) Memories !!! (I actually like both Phish & Matchbox Twenty... go figure... Guster as well - so I would have loved the show no doubt) !!! Thanks for the review :)
