MOJO

I haven't been too enthusiastic about new music for, oh, the last 30 years. But being the eternal optimist, there is always hopeMOJO - Tom Petty's new release (how long has it been?) is well worth the wait. Recorded live, no overdubs, no autotune. Just a tight, experienced band working off each other. Doesn't get any better than this.Shades of Dylan, Duane Allman, Jimmy Page (yes!). Lots 'o bl

Currently reading 4 books: (simultaneously. Yeah, I'm ADD. I'll post the book names if anyone is interested), about the zeitgeist of the mid sixties in LA that was the beginning of the country-folk-rock n' roll that so shaped my love of music as well as defined my life as a young adult.Joni Mitchell, I have all of her early albums, "Blue" is my favorite. "Song to a Seagull" was my first.CSN, "Wood

Lookin for Leslie

Man do I miss the sound of that big Hammond organ with the spinnin Leslie. How that combo defined the sound of so many great bands. Spencer Davis Group, Young Rascals, Deep Purple, Al Kooper, J Geils to name a few.Sure technology has replaced the cumbersome and heavy Hammond. But even the best synthetic Hammond sounds don't have the fullness and richness of the original. Are there any new ban...

Who had(s) the best?

Since I've joined MOG I have been taking a stroll down music memory lane. Was recently thinking of long summer nights spent with friends in the very first apartment any of us ever had. We would turn off all the lights - save one black light (of course!) - and listen over and over to Deep Purple "In Rock." I thought Ian Gillian had the best scream ever in Rock n Roll on "Child in Time." Or maybe i

Anybody remember Mark Almond? How 'bout Gentle Giant? I remember going through a stage when they were all I played. That is, until ex-hub made off with my LP collection. (Bummer. The LPs not the hub)Been wanting to have a listen again to see if they hold up. I think it was Gentle Giant "Three Friends" that had me so mesmerized. I'll snag some downloads this weekend and post what I think af...

Doug "Deluxe" Gebhard and Eddie Townsend. Man, where would I be without them? How many evenings we spent listening to newly released albums just bought from the National Record Mart? Those two had thousands of albums in their collections. Still do, I'm sure. We were 17-ish then. Jefferson Airplane-"Bless It's Pointed Little Head" or waiting for the Beatles White Album. Or Jack Bruce " Never

Is there something similar here?

I first heard this Paul Carrick song "Where did I go wrong?" from a compilation CD my music mentor made for me. (More about him in another post). From the very first bars, I heard Quicksilver Messenger Service - "What About Me". Yikes! THERE'S a tune from the way back machine. Although my politics have changed from those days, the song still stands up.I think Paul Carrick (or whoever wrote ...

So excited! Just compiled my favorite "Driving with the windows down" list
about 3 years ago

I've been waiting to get around to this for a long time. Now that its done, I drove around for an hour or so - with the windows down. In March - to listen. Perfect! Will add as soon as I can get the Mog o Matic to load on Vista 64.
