Band of the Day (06.17.10): DEVO

Posted over 1 year ago

Who?

Formed nearly four decades ago, Devo are one of the most important new wave bands ever. Originally gaining wide exposure with the help of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, Devo have had a massive influence in terms of both style and substance on a variety of contemporary bands. Best-known for the earworm hit "Whip It," the band combined catchy, danceable synth-based songs with nerdy high-concept ideas about "De-Evolution" and the state of the world. The band's first album in two decades, Something for Everybody, came out yesterday.

And I Care Because?

- Are we not men? The original weirdo rockers, Devo have never been shy about pairing crazy, elaborate ideas with killer tunes. They let their freak flag fly while not letting the muscic suffer, and it's something that many bands have tried to emulate since, indie or otherwise.

- This is your album. In what might be a first for a high-profile musician, Devo crowd-sourced everything to do with their new album, from the final list of songs that made the cut to the outfits they're wearing during shows and public appearances, while, of course, satirizing the whole process.

- They've got Something for Everybody. Luckily, the title of Devo's new album lives up to the name, as it seems to span genres and ideas to make a pretty darn accessible album. Luckily, it seems like the crowd-sourcing paid off behind the gimmickry the band set out to make fun of.

Stream Something for Everybody, buy their albums, and watch the album's "listening party" for a bunch of cats.
