Band of the Day (05.21.10): HOLY GHOST!
-
Artist:

Who?
Originally members of DFA-produced hip-hop act Automato, Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel put out their first single as Holy Ghost! in 2007. The single was an immediate club hit, making them a name to watch on the DFA roster, and the duo got just as much recognition for killer remixes of MGMT, Moby, and Phoenix among others. After a slow buildup to new material, the band released its debut EP, Static on the Wire, this week.
And I Care Because?
- They're the best kind of throwbacks. In an age where co-opting the sounds of the past has become a standard for dance music, Holy Ghost! Manage to make their disco-inspired tunes in the best way possible, going so far as to use the kinds of analogue synths that have caused them to have lower productivity. Similarly, their awesome video for "I Will Come Back" is a shot-for-shot remake of New Order's "Confusion."
- It's time to unleash the live show. Can you think of a better possible way for a disco/new wave-inspired act to make its live debut than opening for LCD Soundsystem? That's right, the band will spend the next few months opening for label buddy James Murphy across the country, and if this video of their first performance is an indicator, the live act is well worth the wait.
- This is just the beginning. With Static on the Wire, Holy Ghost! are about to begin their transition from dance music's best-kept secret to what will likely be its next big thing. Though this is just an EP, the band has already stated that their album is complete (including a freaking Michael McDonald collaboration), and it's a good thing, because this first official release is going to leave you craving more.
