Band of the Day (12.09.09): DEAD MAN'S BONES

Posted about 2 years ago

Who?

Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, the Notebook) and fellow actor Zach Shields met while dating two sisters. Their shared love for music and horror led to Dead Man's Bones and its gothic gospel punctuated by an eerie children's choir. While you might be weary of any band fronted by actors, rest assured these guys are the real deal.

And I Care Because?

- Their music is creepy and catchy. Dead Man's Bones somehow manage to use an atmosphere of eeriness as a platform for a wide variety of everyday emotions. Graves, zombies, and bones are all here in the service of love and loss. Despite the cries, the whispers, and the werewolves' howls, the end product comes off as charming rather than gimmicky.

- They're more disciplined than the average band. As soon as they started recording, the band banned electric guitars, set out to play all every instrument themselves (including the ones they had no idea how to play), and gave themselves only three takes per song. And yes, they turned out to be very obedient of those rules.

- They've gotten pretty creative with their live shows. For their first set of tour dates, Dead Man's Bones announced that in each location they would use a different local children's choir, and make the opening act into a talent show organized by the band themselves. Shortly after that, they revealed a 3-day residency in a puppet theater. We don't know what's next, but we know that it's bound to be far from ordinary.

Stream their self-titled debut below, buy it, and watch their wonderfully strange video for "Dead Hearts."
