Band of the Day (11.13.09): THESE NEW PURITANS

Posted 7 days ago

Who?

These New Puritans hail from Southend-on-Sea, England, and they are here to assault your ears with experimental synth-punk, the kind of which you haven't heard in a long time.

And I care because?

- Their lyrics are anything but simple. This isn't your ordinary band of 20-somethings who will use 12 songs to elaborate on the meaning of love. Instead, they choose to explore numerology, infinity, colours that we (don't) see, and the existence of God.

- The bring the intensity of organized chaos. Overlapping and repeating vocals, song parts repeated across other tunes, interludes, and broken down beats create a universe where everything seems to be all over the place... yet it makes perfect sense.

- Wait until you hear their second album. With a press release that promises elements like "six-foot Japanese Taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble, sub-heavy beats, prepared piano," and "a children's choir," do you really even need to ask if this band is something crazy and special?

Stream Beat Pyramid below, buy the album, and watch the video for "Elvis."
