Song of the Week - May 5, 2008 - Go to Sleep

New Song by The Instruments - Does this really sound like Jeff Mangum singing backup?

So I read the following Forkcast below:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/forkcast/50010-the-instruments-ft-jeff-mangum-ode-to-the-sea-mp3-stream

They say that features the ever elusive Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) on back-up. What do you think?

To me it's a flip of the coin....

Evil Urges - No one can say that My Morning Jacket still sounds like My Morning Jacket. The band continues to evolve. The MP3 is available on Pitchfork and Stereogum. I can't wait to hear the rest (Expected release 6/10/2008).

Song of the Week - April 7, 2008 - My Favorite Year

Okay, I have been busy lately. I did, however, have time to buy some new CD's. I don't know why I do it. They get burned on my Computer, and then sit, sit and sit until I decided to go to the Used CD shop.

Here is a list of what I have recently purchased:

The Black Keys - Attack & Release
Billy Bragg - Workers Playtime
R.E.M. - Accelerate
Sun Kil Moon - April
The Raconteurs - Consolers of The Lonely

While I haven't dug into them all yet, I have liked what I have heard. This song by Destroyer tops my list. Oh yeah, I bought this one too...

New Album - "April" will be out this week. I guess I'm back to the sad-bastard music. Everyone falls off the wagon once. April will be a new month.

Song of the Week - March 24, 2008 - Cloud Cult

Cloud Cult has a new release. It may be out, and it may not be out. You just need to know how to find it. I would suggest going to www.cloudcult.com if you are interested. The band is well worth the listen, and this track is da bomb!

Enjoy!

Song of the Week - March 17, 2008 - I Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You

Who is this band from Jacksonville, Florida? Who would have thought that they would produce anything close to an early 80's song by The Cure?

All I know is that Kate Nash is a fan (for whatever that is worth)!

"120 Minutes" was originally a MTV deal (Remember Dave Kendall). Now it has some type of incarnation on VH1 Classic (Don't know the specifics, as I don't have VH1 Classic)

Song of the Week - February 23, 2008 - Bon Iver

Today is the day. I'm going to make a pledge. With my right arm up in the air (seriously I'm only typing with my left hand), I swear that I will officially put my current "Sad Bastard" ("High Fidelity" reference) listening habits behind me.

It's going to be hard. I liken it to keeping an alcoholic out of a bar, or a gambler away from the Racetrack. I will need the help of all Moggers. I'm counting on you to help me stay on the right path. As long as the music is there, I am at risk.

There are some things that will help. Sunshine, warm weather, travel, and the occasional Hot Chip song will all be steps in the right direction.

But wait. I just cannot quit cold turkey. I'm hung-over, the coffee is warm, and it's Sunday morning (at least for another hour and a half). I need this fix just one more time. Please help me. I promise after this, there will be no more (at least until the fall). Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago" is the perfect choice. It haunts me. I don't want to get away from this, at least not today.

Song of the Week - February 18, 2008 - Happy Birthday "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea"

It seems to be an odd twist of fate that I recently finished reading the 33 1/3 series on "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel and immediately came to realize that it celebrated its 10 year Anniversary on February 10th.

The story of Neutral Milk Hotel is not like that of many other popular bands. At what some would consider the starting point of a successful career, the main songwriter, Jeff Mangum, walked away into the shadows of a breakdown. There was no official band break-up. The music just ended. Since then, Mangum sightings and interviews have been rare, as he leads a very private, almost Salingeresque, life.

What he did leave behind was a distinctive style of music that continues to astonish and inspire. Many bands have emulated Mangum’s sound but none with such merit or success. Mangum’s music is raw and emotional with shocking lyrical imagery that has solidified the band’s importance in contemporary alternative music.

Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday to one of the finest albums ever released.

Power Pop Trio from D.C.? - Check out Jukebox the Ghost

I have only ever really given D.C. props for bands like Minor Threat and Fugazi. I'm not saying that Jukebox the Ghost is the in the same league, but they do strike a chord. I've read comparisons to Ben Folds (probably because of their use of piano). Pure and simple, it's power pop that is catchy as anything. Check out and enjoy this remix of "Good Day".

The new Sam Amidon disc "All is Well" is well worth the listen (just ask pitchfork). http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/48534-all-is-well
All Songs are Public Domain. What does that mean? Perhaps you should listen....

Song of the Week - February 11, 2008 - The Beautiful South

There was a time when I sought out everything by The Beautiful South. Now, I rarely listen to them anymore. I recently dug out their CD "Choke", and I must say that it still brings a smile to my face.

"Porch Rock" - The Kamikaze Hearts

There is this Mogger. His name is Edmund Frost Booth (If you haven't added him as a Trusted MOG, you are missing out). I suspect his name is an alias. Something to keep the law off his trail. After all, it is a crime to have good taste in this country. I've been digging this band that he recommended, The Kamikaze Hearts. Check his MOG to hear other tracks. Here is another track from the "Oneida Road" LP that deserves a listen. The track is tragic, yet beautiful. Everytime I hear it, I want to crack open a Sessions Lager and smoke a cigarette. There is nothing else I can say. Goodnight, Elisabeth!

Song of the Week - February 4, 2008 - An Ode to John Hughes and his Soundtracks

Has anyone looked up John Hughes on IMDB lately? My memories are that of a writer/director that brought such classics to life:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Weird Science
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Uncle Buck

You could also count on his soundtracks. Fresh songs (at the time) from artist like Simple Minds, OMD, The Smiths, New Order, and The Psychedlic Furs. I guess he was ahead of his time. That is why it saddens me to see such horrible movies listed to his name (even if under his alias of Edmond Dantes). How could he fall so low? Just look at these titles:

Maid in Manhattan
Flubber
Baby's Day Out

I ask you all to remember the good times with the following submissions.

Here is a classic scene from "Uncle Buck":

My current song of the week. A lost gem from the "Pretty in Pink" Soundtrack:

Song of the Week - January 28, 2008 - A Live Jam by Ryan Adams

Ryan Adams is an insane genius.

You never know what to expect at his shows.

Things that I have witnessed:

1. Playing guitar and singing along to a record of Madonna's "Like a Virgin."

2. Filming a scene for one of his current Youtube videos (see below).

3. Improving a song about United Airlines damaging his acoustic guitar on a flight to Denver.

Things that I have heard about:

1. Ejecting a fan from a concert for requesting the song "Summer of 69".

2. Going on a Paul Westerberg rant in Minnesota.

3. Walking off stage because a monitor didn’t work properly.

It all continues to add to his mystique (Somewhere between Axl Rose and the Grateful Dead). In the end, you either love him or hate him as a performer. There is no middle ground. The two shows that I witnessed this past weekend (Salem and Seattle) confirm his madness; however, they also translate into a rewarding concert experience. The attached MP3 of "Rescue Blues" from the Paramount Theater this weekend is submitted as evidence (Marked Exhibit A).

On The Radar - New Counting Crows

"This is a list of what
I should have been,
but I'm not" - Adam Duritz

I am conflicted with this post. August and Everything After was amazing. Recovering the Satellites was good too. Maybe, I'm more nostalgic for the era and hoping that they will put out something that appeals to more than the Green Monster crowd. What I have heard sounds promising. Welcome back, Counting Crows. "Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings" drops on 3/25/08. Until then you can get a couple of new tracks from their website (www.countingcrows.com). This track here is a rocker.

It's the end of the year, and I don't really have anything insightful to say, other than here is my favorite track of the moment. I can't believe no one has mogged about this one. Cheers...... Happy New Year....

Song of the Week - December 17, 2007

Well, It is almost time to put the year to bed. It was a great year for music. I have compiled a list of songs that made my "Best of 2007" (See my Mog Page). The video below is one of the many tracks that made my list. Enjoy!

I know it's a bit early for my current selection, but I will be traveling over the next couple of days. With the Holiday Season in full swing, I think this song is perfect (Special thanks to the movie ELF and Zooey for the inspiration).

I'm sure that this has been mogged, and mogged again. Radiohead is cool. I was conflicted about posting this track over a most excellent rendition of "The Headmasters Ritual" that was also done during this session. Anyone heard the second disc from "In Rainbows" yet? How is it?

Installment #4 - Songs of Yesterday

At one point during the early 90's, MTV's "120 Minutes" profiled the Madchester scene. It was supposed to be the British equivalent to the hippie generation of the 1960's. Bands such as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans U.K. 808 State, and James were leading the charge on a new "revolution." I think it meant that they were taking a lot of drugs, wearing bell bottoms, and starting the idea of "the rave." Some great music was released, and here is one stellar track. Enjoy!!!!

Very rarely do I go to a concert, and have what some might consider a "religious experience." My last spiritual awakening happened in 2006, when I saw Sufjan at the Crystal Ballroom. It also happened last night. I was completely floored by Iron & Wine's performance at the very same venue. Classic tracks were reworked in the vein of "The Shepards Dog.” If you haven't seen Iron & Wine live, I would strongly suggest that you seek them out. Also, give a shout out to Mr. Leroy Bach (formerly of Wilco) who is playing Keys and Guitar. My song of the week comes from NPR's Live From All Songs Considered. Enjoy this reworked version of "Upward over the Mountain".

Recently, I've been digging around my CD collection to update my ipod. I found this gem last night, and feel it deserves a shout out for the week. Mark Eitzel is the lead singer of American Music Club. I consider him one of the best songwriters around. If you don't have the CD, "Songs of Love - Live at the Borderline", it is essential to any American Music Club fan. It was originally sold as an import. Have a great week.

Installment #3 - Songs of Yesterday - The Great Debate

Who are the kings of indie rock? I recently discovered that Mr. Kevin Drew (aka Broken Social Scene) has some thoughts on the subject. Not really, but he did do some cool covers of Pavement and Dinosaur Jr. in Washington D.C. (Thanks NPR), So who will it be?

PAVEMENT

Oh Liz, what happened to you? Did you lose all your indie street cred and vanish into corporate rock oblivion? Will you only be remembered as the "Why Can't I" singer? Hell no!!!! You released one of the best albums of the 1990's.

I don't remember when I first heard this song. I seem to recall it being played on 970 AM (The Beat) here in Portland. My first reaction was, "Who is this?" I don't really know a lot about Kitchens of Distinction, however, there was a time when "The Death of Cool" ruled my CD player.

Now that's what I call quite good. Okay, It's Thanksgiving Eve, and I'm cold. This song is a perfect introduction to the Holiday Season. Its hard to believe that this song originated from the same minds that brough you The Beautiful South and Fatboy Slim.

Who's Better?

I originally wanted to title this post "Does R.E.M. Suck?", but I thought better of it. Listening to the recently released R.E.M. Live had me questioning their relevance. I'm calling on all my fellow moggers to help me decide who is/was a better band? I’ve pitted R.E.M against a band that I considered a formidable opponent. So here goes nothing……

In the first corner we have......

The opponent.......

As I once was and still am a diehard fan of The Smiths, I found this cover by The Arcade Fire to be very interesting. I wish they would have done it when I saw them this summer. Oh well..... Now if I can only find a good version of "Ask" by The Decemberists.

Song of the Week - November 19, 2007

Ok, its been two weeks since my last post. I am back with a vengance. Things have been a bit crazy of late. This latest installment has forced me to come to the realization of two things. First, it is time to start thinking about a Top Ten for 2007. Second, that Sigur Ros has put out a cool little EP.

I dig this song!!!!!

Happy Turkey Day!!!!

Is there a buzz? She wrote 1234 for/with Feist. She is opening for BSS/Kevin Drew, and her voice haunts me. New Buffalo is the name and she has the song of the week. Happy Halloween!!!!

Post Show - Broken Social Scene/Kevin Drew - Portland, Oregon - 10/27/07

Kevin Drew is Broken Social Scene. The band will always be a revolving door of members. The current six member line-up (sans Feist, Apostle of the Hustle, Stars, and Jason Collett) rocked the Aladdin on October 27, 2007 playing an assortment of songs. While Kevin was a little "under the weather" the band played a truly amazing show. Highlights included the mellow version of "It's All Gonna Break" (a request of the audience) and "Major Label Debut."

Setlist:
Lucky Ones
Cause = Time
F--ked Up Kid
Safety Bricks
TBTF
Stars And Sons
Frightening Lives
Backed Out On The....
Superconnected
American Analog Set Song (Unknown)
Bohdi Sappy/Weekend
Farewell to the Pressure Kids
Lovers Spit
Major Label Debut
It's All Gonna Break (mellow version)
When It Begins (Crowd Sing along)

This is best to my memory(98% accurate).

The King of Mope - New Song

I saw this a while ago on Morrissey-solo.com. The song reminds me of his work from "Your Arsenal".

Now the question is can he put together a proper CD in 2008?

Backed Out Of The….

In anticipation of the BSS presents Kevin Drew show next Saturday (Oct 27) at the Aladdin Theater in PDX, I have added the latest and greatest BSS video. If Geddy Lee is not making a cameo, then Dinosaur Jr. is joining in on the fun.

I really haven't figured out who will be at the show (other than Kevin Drew), however, I know that:

"It's All Gonna Break!!!"

Wes Anderson Likes The Kinks....

Wes Anderson likes The Kinks. I now know why... Three songs from "Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround" are on his latest soundtrack.

What is your favorite Kinks CD?

Enjoy "Powerman"

Song of the Week - October 15, 2007

I had one of those "High Fidelity" moments yesterday at Everyday Music. It's a store that I use to frequent, but ITUNES has made me forget the joy of going to a Record Shop. Rather than the store clerk selling three copies of The Beta Band, I was hooked in by Millie Jackson's "It Hurts So Good." I really know nothing of the CD, other than it's got a soul that Amy Winehouse will never have. Enjoy
