   vannatta says By the way - in this case, Amidon is not giving away his compositions, as he has recorded songs that are already in the Public Domain - i.e. very old traditional folk songs, that no one owns the copyright on... that of course, does not mean that he doesn't own the actual sound recording copyright on his particular interpretation of these works. Cheers...

   vannatta says Public Domain usually means that no one owns or controls a particular piece of intellectual property - songs, books, technology etc... and so you could do whatever you wanted with it. It varies by country and does get a little hairy, for example in the US now, everything is under a federal copyright for the life of an author plus 70 years, so there may not really be a Public Domain anymore.
