WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Suggestions for good R&B/soul music

Posted over 3 years ago
I was recently introduced to Joss Stones' "The Soul Sessions," and have quickly gotten addicted to her voice and her lyrics. I couldn't believe she was only 16 when she recorded this album. In the past few weeks I've also really gotten into Alicia Keys' music (more R&B than soul, but equally amazing). My music changes with my mood, and lately I've really been trying to find more artists similar to these two. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other similar soul and R&B artists... (Actually, I pretty much love all types of music, so if you have any other artists you absolutely love and would like to suggest them, feel free!)

  1. pasteque says You could try Erykah Badu ( I *think* I spelled it right...). I only have one album of hers, but it is sort of along those lines. So yeah... I know there are more. IknowitIknowit..... Just having terrible mind-blank. And happen to be listening to said artist. Oh, and I know this sounds weird, but Putumayo has some "world lounge" albums which may have some of the sort of music you're looking for... Course, it might be in another language, but it might be good. (Not an expert, as have only heard these playing while in bookshops.) Anyway. good lucks.

  2. SWozniak says Baduism is a great album. I second the nom. If you want something sung with soul, try the Dresden Dolls. Though it's not soul music. Can't recommend them enough.

  4. Mac Vouty says I would try some of the classic R&B that Joss Stone covers. I discovered Joss this year too, and she pretty much blew me away. Try seventies Aretha Franklin, especially her original of All the Kings Horses (which Joss also does). Try early to mid seventies Stevie Wonder: like Fufillingness First Finale and Innervisions. I'd also try a little Al Green (check out his greatest hits). And yeah, I've heard Erykah Badu is pretty good. Along that lines you might also try Me'shell Ndegecello, especially the song Who Is He and What Is He To You.

  5. stevenkinsey says I would say the classic 60's and 70s soul singers are a place to start. Aretha is a good place to start. On a more esoteric vibe I would say Bettye Swan and Betty Wright. For more recent artists check out Alice Russell.

  7. RevUp64 says If you like that Joss Stone album, I'd have to recommend "I Am Shelby Lynne," which is one of my favorite white soul records. Lately I've returned to Labelle's "Nightbirds," another mighty fine R&B album.
