My New Fav thing to Listen to

Posted over 2 years ago
I've been loving Phil Schaap on the Colombia University radios stations. He is a jazz scholar has these long broadcasts playing jazz and putting them in context. He'll speak for about 20 minutes about every musicican in a 5 minute piece and give you loads of superfluous information. It's sort of tedious and most of my drives are too short to hear more than one song and the preceding commentary (actually it's long schpeel), but it's so worth it to pay attention. Best example of this is the 3-hour segment of his broadcast entitled "Max Roach Radio!" He argues that Max Roach is the greatest drummer of all time and plays just about everything he ever recorded in chronological order, live performances AND each and every take for studio recordings. I lov ejazz but it only make sup about 10% of wha ti listen to, and when i DO listen i generally dont' even notice teh drumming. However, becaus eof this program I'm actually paying attention to jazz drumming which is usually the most subtle part of jazz bands. And taht's why it takes such genous to makea mark in that department, as Max Roach has. Anyway, my point is i wish there were more thesis-based radio that heightens the audience's appreciation of music. This is the best I've seen despite all the long winded-ness, repittion, and superfluous information I can't absorb, GO ACADEMIA! http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/archives/jazz.html

  1. Kate says When a DJ is knowledgeable and has opinions worth sharing makes it still worth it to listen to the radio. I love Max Roach, and I wish I had a better memory when it comes to memorizing the players- 'cause when you hang out with real jazz heads, the conversation can get quite esoteric. Thanks for the links!
