One Too Many MorningsIn "One Too Many Mornings," a weakened, weary singer is quite literally on the threshold of a breakup. It has been said that the song was occasioned by Dylan's real-life breakup with girlfriend Suze Rotolo (pictured on the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan cover). In a deceptively simple three-verse lyric with a refrain, Dylan explores the psychology of the lovers' breakup. The first verse sets the scene, "down the street the dogs are barkin'," and as day turns into night, a silence descends on the street. But that silence is belied and shattered by "the sounds inside my mind." For the singer, it's been "one too many mornings/and a thousand miles behind."The lover is at the crossroads of the relationship, on the brink of departure. Dylan's phrasing "crossroads of my doorstep" echoes the blues tradition, where "crossroads" have taken on mythic proportions (as on Robert Johnson's "Crossroads Blues"). At this pivotal point, the singer takes a look back to the room they shared, the street, "the sidewalk and the sign" -- as if he's taking a final mental snapshot before he fades away. continued - (allmusic)
