WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

How to talk about Music

Posted over 3 years ago
Yesterday we took a tour through the National Museum of Women in the Arts and in the exhibit "The Book As Art: Twenty Years of Artists' Books" we viewed this gem -*How to talk about art*by Miriam Shenitzer"In this do-it-yourself guide, the narrator, a rat, points out that you can't get by on the same old cliches any more when talking about art. Taking the reader through "a few easy steps", the rat shows how to use a very limited number of words in different combinations to create new lingo about art to suit any occasion."and I got to thinking how unable I am to really describe the music I listen to in any detail; getting tongue-tied and verbally challenged in the process, stumbling over words like awesome, great, sweet, and the rest as I search for descriptive phrases. I always envy those of you that have the gift (and education) to write a worthwhile review, and I also salute and honor your verbosity, (that wasn't really the word I was looking for either but you get the idea). ps- I've decided to stay on vacation indefinitely. This is the life!

  2. B42 says Justin - I really suck at math... Steve - Not sure if I want to think about it too much, rats give me the willies, one of my known fears...(besides wharf rats of course, they're all good.) Listen to Wharf Rat gd76-06-17

  4. garrick says I know what you mean. I tend to do the comparison thing - for instance, I might say something like: "It's like if Mike Mills left REM and did a project with Duran Duran (their old stuff) except put some Metallica guitar in there, and swap out Simon LeBon for Patty Smith - but make it disco.... in a good way." I don't know if it helps or hurts.

  10. bobglaza says What a great analogy drawn here, Brudda B. Or maybe its a metaphor - I always get those confused. At any rate its a jumping off point. A book (words & pictures) talking about art (visual) urging you to blog (words & pictures) about art (music/aural). The thing that makes all ART (isn't that RAT misspelled?) s-o-o-o valuable is its ability to spark the creative in us. It's a gift. Whether you want to admit it or not, you have the gift - you are an artist. I can hardly believe you're bad at math? - you're a carpenter ain't you? A pure craftsman by virtue of some of the things I've seen. So far as vacation - we missed the boat in this US culture. I say we start a movement to take 2 weeks every quarter to renew ourselves. You with me? Love the word verbosity and all its derivatives :) I'm gonna use it today! Keep truckin'
