WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The End Must Be Near (or WTF?)

Posted over 3 years ago
This is totally out of character for me but I'm actually listening to Christmas music before Thanksgiving! Heading down to Georgia in a couple of weeks for an extended working vacation, and stocking up on the tunage for the trip.Been on a Joan Osborne kick lately and a bit disappointed by Pretty Little Stranger, not so much for the sound, it's great and I dig anything she sings, but just about all of the songs on this album are about lost love and just so damn depressing. So I checked into Joan's Christmas Means Love and immediately had my spirit lifted, soulful, inspiring, and perfectly executed. (pun intended)I'm not usually into the Christmas music, beyond the seemingly mandatory list of regulars overheard in every shopping mall and gas station between here and Nazareth but this year I'm going to be a bit more picky and choosy on my Christmas listening preferences. Is it too early for some needed recommendations from my fellow moggers?http://www.davis.k12.ut.us/schools/valleyview/images/1D777A1FA20D4E588E22958C95550C7A.gif

  1. dermahrk says I've only heard one Christmas album in my long life that I like and has become a staple in our household every year - the Beach Boys Christmas Album.

  6. ooeh says You ever hear that Joan Osborne parody? It sounds exactly like her, but she sings, "What if God smoked cannibus?" - holy moly, that took my by surprise! For Christmas, I like Bing Crosby.

  7. blueone51 says I’m also a huge Osborne fan and was disappointed by her latest – a little too straight-ahead C&W for my tastes. Didn’t know she had done a Christmas thing, so thanks for the heads-up. As for other Christmas albums, you can’t go wrong with going old school: Dean Martin - Making Spirits Bright. Sounds like a lot of spirits were consumed in its making but in a good way. “Baby, It's Cold Out” is a classic.

  9. bobglaza says what a sentimentalist, B - :) - I'm a bit of the "its too early for Christmas until Dec 24th" on the outside but must admit....the Salvation Army Brass band outside the local grocery store yesterday was pretty cool...though live music is my downfall - AND they even had a violinist inside playing Handels Messiah so it looks like the Spirit is moving! HumBug! Anyway - my favorite Christmas albums (cds) are by John Fahey - he put out 2 - here's "one":http://www.newburycomics.com/rel/v2_viewupc.php?storenr=103&upc=00878100042&pt=1&affnr=485 of them - so its in print (albeit a different cover than the one I have)...and the Putamayo presents cd looks like a good one - IF your into the holiday celebration around the world and "New Orleans":http://www.worldmusiccentral.org/article.php/20061017200603243 Peace, My Brother - safe trip to the South -
