The Beginning of Emo

Posted over 5 years ago
I couldn't believe it when I ran across these videos on Youtube. Rites of Spring from Washington, DC's 9:30 club in 1985 and Embrace from the same location in 1986.For those unfamiliar with these bands, Rites of Spring was Guy Picciotto's band before joining Fugazi, and Embrace was Ian Mackay's band between Minor Threat and Fugazi. These two bands (Rites of Spring especially) are widely considered the first "emo" bands. This was before my time, but as the story goes, someone in the audience shouted "Emo-core!" at a Rites of Spring show, and the name stuck. Although considered the same genre, Ian Mackay apparently didn't like the label at all. This just goes to show how much what is called "emo" has changed.Pay attention to the Rites of Spring video... at about the 2:30 mark, after Guy falls into Brendan Canty's drum set, you'll see Ian Mackay run onstage to help set it back up.Rites of Spring - "In Silence/Words Away"Embrace - "The Last Song"

  1. Wade says I read someone say that Husker Du's masterpiece-Zen Arcade was the first "emo" album--but this fits in the time frame and general sound of Embrace and Rites of Spring, but Husker Du tended to be more introspective and mopey

  2. karmasonik says For my opinion , every true and good music is emotion, you recognize this music by so many bands that moves something deep inside of us, and make us bigger in every way'- is a shame that new generation of bands are just selling out themselves making comercial crap, and infecting people with a bad taste of music (musical ignorance). . hope i explain myself right : / anyway check this link, is about some lost good band called 'early grace' (1995), you can found more bands on that page + http://www.onedaysavior.com/blog/earlygrace_song13.mp3 greetings
