Ms. Badu has to be one of the classiest soul/r&b singers alive today! The song above is from her live cd in '97 that is one of my favorites of hers. It's a cover of a Chaka Khan song & Erykah just nails it.

Next month I will get to see Erykah live for the very first time at a local music festival in my town! Ms. Badu is coming to me, I can't wait. I was shocked since the closest she's been to me was in Oakland & that was way too expensive. So not only is this reasonable it's extremely convenient too! I found this short clip of her doing "Rapper's Delight" in concert & it is so cool, I hope she does it when I see her.

Is that not incredible?!!! I wish they had the entire song.

This whole live cd is thoroughly wonderful song after song. If you like Erykah but haven't purchased a cd of hers this is a great intro. to her. I love all her albums but I always find myself craving to hear this one. These live versions of her songs are even better than the recorded version due to Erykah's warmth & personality she puts into the performance. It just gives the original songs so much more depth and interest plus you hear her stage banter & interact with the crowd.

Although not a proper album since it has alot of the songs off her first album "Baduizm" on it, I still love it. My favorite proper cd of hers is "Worldwide Underground" though.

Here's another clip of her live singing "On & On" back in '97 or '98:

Just read an article interviewing Erykah linked to her website where she talks about that she has THREE new albums, the first of which is coming out in September. The second one will be out 6 months after in March '08 & the third in September '08. How exciting is that?!!!! Wow!!!! New Badu soon!!!!

She is great! One of the few credible Soul artists around right now. You're very lucky to see her August cos I feel sure she'll put on a great show. I sometimes wish for a great Soul scene but sadly there's so few artists like Erykah.

I never followed the Badu hype until I saw a live clip of her and realized she was the real deal, not a bunch of marketing, and I was so impressed with her. Sadly, though, I have not followed that up by buying anything, which I suppose I should be beat up for. Smack me! I'll get to rectifying it, but she should be on eMusic.

There, I have an excuse.

Jeff, there are a few quality soul artists out there like Angie Stone & India Arie. I know there are others that I haven't bothered to search out just because my taste for soul music is limited. I know it will be a great show & I feel very fortunate that she's coming to my city!

Tripsis, it took me awhile to get into her although I liked her from her very first single "On & On". When her '00 album "Mama's Gun" came out I eventually bought it & loved it. What really got me into her as a diehard fan was her song w/Common for the movie "Brown Sugar" called "Love Of My Life". I so LURV that song & I like Common too(although I have none of his cds). Once I fell in love w/that song(& the movie which I own)I had to have all her cds. This live cd was my next buy. I'm uploading it to M here in a minute so you can have a listen.

Tee, yea, I'm very excited to see her & this festival is alot of fun too. It used to be called the Health & Harmony festival (it's now just Harmony Festival)& there's lots of "alternative" lifestyle folks who are into the more earthy side of life. I'm not necessarily into that whole scene but everyone there is very laid back & very friendly & fun. I went for the first time last year(even though it's been going on for 20+ yrs, I've only lived in the area for 11 yrs.) & had a blast! Cake & Ozomatli played as well as a ton of other bands.

She is so good, and I would love the chance to see her in concert. I have seen clips on tv, and she seems to have a way of getting your attention and you are hypnotized the entire set. I will be waiting for a full review August.

Yes bro, she does have a way about her, I would agree. She's very charismatic. The festival isn't until June 12th so it's going to be a little while before I get a review out but I definitely will let you know how she is live.

Kind of - I was in San Antonio Thursday and Friday. Then, I had to get up so early Saturday that I was a zombie the whole day.

You went to TX for your job huh? Did you do anything fun while you were there? Why did you have to get up so early Sat.?

Yep. I saw the Alamo and I walked the riverwalk and I bought the coolest Dia de los Muertos figurine - it's this lady with a hot body and a skeleton face. Very cool. My flight out was at 6am, so to get to the airport by 4 I was up by 2:45. I don't recommend it.

Cool. Not seen the Alamo even though I've been to TX. I love Dia de los Muertos stuff & mexican artwork in general. Going to bed at that time is more my speed. Hate getting up that early, it _always_ fucks up my day too, lol!

You didn't miss much. It was more of a "mark this off the list, because now I've seen it" thing. There wasn't much to it. I had never seen Dia de los Muertos art before - it is seriously cool stuff. Google Frenzy Art (it might even be frenzyart.com - I don't remember). It's all DdlM stuff. I think I'm going to order some more stuff.

Me, I am a big fan of being dead asleep at 2:45 - haha.

Ha, everything is on my list. Just so I can say I did. Oh - I can't believe I forgot this one - I got to meet (more like get introduced to, it happened so fast) R. Lee Ermey. You know the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket? Very cool.

I can see why you'd forget that, lol! Like the movie but had no idea who he was. He must be really old by now!

chucky says:

Haha, no - I was really excited about meeting him. I love, love, love that opening scene in full metal jacket. And yes, he is quite old - but not feeble or anything.
