WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Into The White Pixies

Posted over 2 years ago
This past weekend I bought "Pixies - Live At The Paradise In Boston", which was released in '06. It's a great performance by one of my fav bands. Here's one of the songs they performed "Into The White"(this is a live performance in '91 however, since I couldn't find what I wanted on youtube):I thoroughly enjoyed watching the dvd & there's even a performance in the extras of one of their first live gigs in 1986 which is pretty amazing too. Now, after all these years & owning all their cds & some cd singles I find out that there are some amazing songs that I haven't heard like "Into The White", "Winterlong" & "All Around The World" that they play on this live dvd! How in the world did I miss these?Anyone know where I can find these songs? I need them in my music collection cause they are *SO* incredible. Please, please, please, let me, let me, let me, get what I want this time!

  5. RGM says Very cool, never really got into the Pixies but never really paid attention. Their really good, guess thats why DH made MOG... :)

  6. Augusts1 says Ray, Pixies rock hard but also have some great melodies & funny/off the wall lyrics. You really should check them out more. Pixies are who inspired Kurt Cobain)among many, many others)who stated in interviews that he was trying to rip off their sound w/the loud/quiet/loud formula.

  7. chucky says I feel like I'm always calling myself out here, but I only have Doolittle. I don't know why, it's easily one of my favorite albums but I never picked up anything else they did.

  8. Augusts1 says Doolittle is probably my *least* fav of theirs cause it's so poppy but I still love it. I didn't really get into them until '90 when they released the cd "Bossanova" & I fell in love w/the song "Velouria". It was all over after that. I recall when "Doolittle" came out & reading rave reviews about it. I was at my fav record store & asked to hear it & didn't much care for it at the time cause it just sounded too raw & I was just not into it(I was into The Cure, The Smiths, etc). "Surfer Rosa" is the cd I keep going back to the most. It's much punkier & so good but really I love them all. "Trompe Le Monde" is really hard rock & has some incredible songs on it too. They all have their great aspects about them.

  9. RGM says I thought Kurt was ripping off a lot of bands at the time I thought Nirvana when they first came out were good not great. Before that in L.A. I almost replaced Pat Kim's place in his old Punk band Labeled Victims. John Pepsworh was the singer at the time, thought they were better. But they were edgeyer, I mean it wasn't that Nirvana ripped off a lot of Bands. But I didn't see anything that special in them other than good marketing. Music Business, all it is...I've done the same Geffen record thing he did pretty much. :)

  10. Augusts1 says Ray, at least Kurt was open about his musical piracy, lol. Nirvana certainly wasn't original but they just happened to write a song that struck a chord w/the public ('Smells Like Teen Spirit'), a look, an attitude & good marketing that gelled to fit the need at the time. I think Kurt was a talented songwriter but as you say, he wasn't anything special. With that being said, I am a fan of their music & have all their cds. I'm just realistic about the fact that they rode a wave that was occuring at that moment. Check out Pixies, far more talent & deservedly so! I'll post a cd to M for you & Ash to hear.

  12. RGM says I think "Come As You Are," is a great book to read for music biz majors or those looking to get into the biz. But I'll say one of my fave bands, it's all good ...I'll check out the pixies thats a cool song on that you posted... ;)

  17. RGM says Ahahahahaha! You Suck! Too Funny & Cool @ the same time... For Ashley & Ray, who both need more Pixies edumacation! A pretty raw, punkier sound than their later cds. Produced by Steve Albini who lent his soon to be legendary big drum sound to the mix. Enjoy the wonder that is Pixies! And remember, they're ED-U-CA-TION-AL! Their cool I think I've heard their stuff but didn't know who they we're... Thanks for the M post enjoying the music... :)

  18. Augusts1 says Lol, you suck backatcha, heh! Glad you're enjoying Pixies, yvw. That ed-u-ca-tion-al comment is the chorus of a song off their "Trompe Le Monde"(their last) cd called "U-Mass", fyi!

  19. Jammy Jeff says Great stuff August. I'm not sure where you'd find these "lost" songs. Have they been released on any format at all ?

  20. Augusts1 says Yea, apparently "Winterlong" is a Neil Young song that was on "The Bridge Concert" cd. "Into The White" is on Pixies B-side cd. 1234Chainsaw posted those two songs for me over on Multiply. "All Around The World" remains a mystery.

  21. zoot says yeah, i figured 'winterlong' was a neil young cover. i just watched neil play it, last night, while checking out his fantastic -- massy hall dvd. and 'all around the world' is a frank black song... the pixies perform the song on their acoustic: live in newport dvd. rock on, aug.

  22. Augusts1 says Cool Zoot, thanks for the info! Any idea what album of Frank Black's that song is on? I have his first two solo cds "Frank Black" & "Teenager Of The Year" & it's not on either of those. How is that Live In Newport dvd? They have a preview of them playing a song on this dvd that I just bought & it looks fairly good.

  23. zoot says no problemo. been all around this world (trad) was recorded for frank's honeycomb cd, but not included on the final record. the acoustic live in newport dvd, is must-have for a diehard fan such as yourself.

  24. Augusts1 says Cool, thanks for letting me know where that song came from Zoot. I'm going to have to rent that dvd or buy it if I can't find it to rent.

  25. zoot says the soon to be released frank black "93-03":http://tinyurl.com/37sjts; a ten year retrospective cd, of blacks' best solo material, contains a bonus live rarities disc, which includes a version of 'been all around the world'. so there ya go,august. it's your lucky day.
