WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

It Won't Be Long Alison or ISENIH #29

Posted over 2 years ago
Some of you swell Moggers might not be familiar with my early nineties series(especially you who are new to my posts). ISENIH stands for "I'm So Early Nineties It Hurts". The reason I titled these as such is that in my music collection I picked up ALOT of music during that time, music that has gone by the wayside due to do my music addiction for more new sounds. This is an effort to revisit that music & re-appreciate the gems in my collection. And it's also an effort to fill in the gaps(thanks Neill)in the MOG library. Just to catch everyone up, so you know. The 29th installment(I can't believe I've done 29 of these already) of this series is about an Essex, England artist by the name of Alison Moyet, with a gorgeous, silky & smoky alto voice. "Hoodoo", released in '91 was my introduction to her as a solo artist. Here's the first single called "It Won't Be Long":This single caught my attention due to Alison's wonderful voice but also because of the appropriation of the "shoegaze" style of music that was popular at that time(Curve,MBV,Catherine Wheel, Lush, Ride, etc). I say appropriation because once I picked up the album I discovered that it wasn't her usual style, but I loved her voice so much it didn't matter. Here's another fav from this cd:This following live performance is closer to her usual style, the song "Rise":Just absolutely love her voice! Alison took a good length of time off after her '94 cd "Essex" when her label Sony began trying to tell her what to do creatively on that album. She made another cd but Sony refused to release it due to their creative differences(Sony, of course wanted more 'commercial' songs to sell & Alison didn't). Alison waited out her contract with Sony and finally was able to release "Hometime" in '02. She released another in '04 of covers and apparently is working on a new release.Alison started out in the group Yaz(in the U.S., Yazoo in the U.K.)in '81 but split after two albums & went solo in '83. She released her first solo cd "Alf" in '84 followed by "Raindancing" in '87.Thanks to "Chucky":http://mog.com/chucky/blog_post/75231 and "Mousetrapmedia":http://mog.com/mousetrapmedia/blog_post/80344#commentsfor being the inspirations for this post!http://www.alisonmoyet.co.uk/home.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_Moyet

  2. darmuzz says Augusts, I am glad you are on Mog doing the ISENIH series! To follow up on one of my long-ago comments, I missed a huge chunk of 90s music. From 89-92 I listened to Sugar Cubes, RCHP, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but then got busy with career/new house/new baby. So I actually have a gap from about 93 to 97 where I heard virtually nothing new unless it was on the radio. When I started buying music again, I didn't know anyone into music, so my choices were "safe" until I got my confidence back! I recognize a lot of names from your posts, but hardly own anything you've posted on. So your posts are filling in the gaps in my musical memory as well! I do remember Alison Moyet...obviously because of her voice...I hear she has a covers album out that I would like to hear.

  3. mktackabery says great stuff August, I kind of missed out on Allison because I was heavy into deep dark industrial music at the time - Skinny Puppy, Meat Beat Manifesto, et. al. She does have the Voice with a capital V. Hugs.

  5. Augusts1 says Yes she does Neill, even now. During '80-84 I was going to a Baptist college so I was listening to alot of christian music so I missed out on alot of the really good synth/goth music that was being made at the time. Thank goddess I left all that behind, lol! Darmuzz, I'm glad that you are enjoying these posts & they are filling in some of your missing musical memory. That's what I'm here for! It seems that when friends of mine in my real life had kids they inevitable miss out on a period of time in music since raising babies is so time consuming. I chose to opt out of having children myself since I knew they took alot of time & effort. Good for you taking that time though! Parenthood is an honorable undertaking & I have the utmost respect for anyone who takes it on. Btw, I mentioned her covers album towards the end of my post, heh. Sis, you are such a industrial goth, lol! I was into those bands as well as NIN but not so much that I couldn't enjoy/appreciate more poppy artists or incredible talent. Hugs backatcha. Oceanrain, thanks for posting that vid, that is a good tune. I really need to check out her '80s solo work.

  10. Augusts1 says In your top ten? Wow, that's saying something Kev. And I have no idea how many of these posts I will do since I'm just going through my collection. Let's just say I've only posted a small portion of what I have in my collection so far. So you're stuck w/this series, lol!

  11. Jammy Jeff says I love Allison's early stuff with Yazoo. She and Vince Clarke managed to combine the cold synth electronica with her warm sultry Soul voice. "Upstairs At Eric's" and "You And Me Both", are still great albums. I'll upload a couple of my favourites right now. You'll find the Yazoo singles on Youtube like "Don't Go" and "Only You" which are brilliant, but the albums had other tracks which showed the depth of songwriting and her ability to carry a song using her unique vocal. good spot August, and sorry I haven't been around (I'm back now).

  14. Augusts1 says Hey there you are! Was wondering where you've been Jeff. No worries. Yea, I missed out on Yaz/Yazoo back in the day. Thanks for posting these two songs. You're right the 2nd song is haunting & quite beautiful! When I was searching for the vids I watched one of her vids when she was in Yaz/Yazoo.

  15. chucky says Her solo stuff seems like it was very different than Yaz. Bummer. But her voice is just gorgeous no matter what.

  16. Augusts1 says Yea it is different than Yaz. From the vids I saw of her early solo stuff on Youtube I wasn't too wild about but this cd & her next one "Essex" I like. Regardless of the style though I can still appreciate her gorgeous voice.
