Walking Down Madison or ISENIH #24

Posted over 2 years ago
Oh my goddess, I FORGOT how much I love this song:I was aware of Kirsty prior to her "Electric Landlady" album because she had done several duets with The Pogues & Billy Bragg. But "Walking Down Madison" was the first time I'd heard her solo. Such a great song but so unrepresentative of the rest of this album. Most of it is really poppy & some of it kitschy. Some nice pop ditties mind you but not what I was expecting at all. And I do like Kirsty's voice."Walking Down Madison" was co-written with Johnny Marr and he played guitar & keyboards on the song, which I didn't know until now. No wonder I love it so much! Anything Marr does I love.I also just found out while researching this that Kirsty died in an unfortunate scuba diving accident in Cozumel, Mexico, December '00. She was hit by a speedboat while she was scuba diving with her husband & two sons(one of which was in the path of the oncoming boat & she pushed him out of the way but died immediately upon impact). How very sad but quite heroic! You can read more about it at the wiki link below. There was alot of controversy surrounding her death because it was a protected area for scuba diving so no boats were to be there. There were no vids for this album so here's a performance of "Your 15 Minutes Start Now" on the English show "French & Saunders": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirsty_MacColl

  2. Rawkkiddoh says The pain of hearing this song again. Dont get me wrong I absolutely love this album, but the first time I heard it I was at First Ave dancing the night away. It came on, and I ran up to the DJ booth to ask who it was. She told me Kirsty MacColl, and I went home vowing to remember it. The next day I went to the record store, and could not quite remember who it was. I searched for hours, and finally found what I thought I was looking for. Turnes out Kathy Mattea, and Kirsty MacColl are not so similar, one makes great music, the other is a modern country star. I listened to the tape on the way home, and just about cried when I saw it was not what I had listened to. I went back to First Ave a week later, found the dj and this time wrote it down. I told her what had happened, she laughed and gave me the cd for free. Ended up being a great night.

  3. Augusts1 says Trip, that's quite some story, lol. Another reason we're siblings from other mothers, heh. Yea, I'd be afraid to buy something unless I absolutely knew for sure it was the right album cause I'm anal like that! Understandable why you were so upset & that's so cool the dj gave you the cd. Did you end up going home w/her?

  4. Rawkkiddoh says Yeah right, when it comes to the ladies I am painfully shy. I never know quite what to say, and if I do talk its usually not the right thing to be said. Most of the girlfriends I have had were after knowing them as friends, I seem to woo the women if I do not think there is anything at stake.........
