When Quincy Was Way Cool

Posted almost 5 years ago
I've been diggin' on Quincy Jones album "Big Band Bossa Nova" from '64. Picked this up at my local library to give some early Quincy a spin. I gotta say it's pretty groovy & funky in a jazzy, latin rhythms way. I was also quite suprised that I recognized the first track off of it called "Soul Bossa Nova". A week or so ago Rawkiddo posted a rap group that used a sample from "Soul Bossa Nova" and I can't recall their name but I let him know where the sample came from(I know you'll remind me Rawk, lol). You most likely will recognize this tune from the 2nd Austin Powers movie "The Spy Who Shagged Me" in the beginning dance number & also in the beginning dance number in "Goldmember", which also features Quincy in a cameo! Here is the "Goldmember" vid:This is my fav of the two dance sequences because of the part w/Britney Spears where she totally makes fun of her persona(as does Austin/Mike Meyers)! Hilarious bit w/the machine gun boobs, hehehe!Anyway, I tried to load some of the other songs up so you could hear them but I burned it onto my puter in WMA format long before I joined Mog & switched over most of my music to MP3s. Since I got it through the library I can't convert it since I don't have the original cd. C'est la vie!The rest of the cd is cocktail jazz in a similar style, just different variations of latin influences. It was in the era of martini parties & jazz bars where world beats first got their start. Ultra cool & groovy!

  3. Jammy Jeff says I've only got a retrospective Greatest hits album and "The Dude" from 1981. I'd love to get some of his 60's releases, but he did so many. It's a little like where do you start with Frank Zappa ?

  6. Augusts1 says Yea Jeff I hear ya. With prolific artists like Quincy it's difficult to know where to start. Tripbro, Quincy is just cool now as opposed to being way cool back then. He lost a few cool points when he did 'We Are The World', lol!

  11. Hermes says I love that song, though I never saw the movie. It's also on a few compilations, one of which I can call my own. And I think I know the remix too ;).

  12. Augusts1 says It's a great one for sure Hermes. The movies are pretty goofy/silly humor which I enjoy but they're not for everyone. Quincy is a genius & to be well known for so many years you know he has the talent.
